If you haven’t done it before you should practice wet sanding and buffing on a spare panel. Do you have a buffer?
Pick up some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and a small flex block (I use meguiar’s).
Wet the surface and begin sanding lightly. Stop often and dry the bumper and check for a smooth and uniform, dull surface.
Be EXTREMELY careful around edges and bends because you can sand through the clear coat in a quick second.
This is what you’re going for:

I prefer Meguiar’s M105 cut compound followed by M205 polish.
Buff till it’s shiny.

I have about 100 more, the owner is one of my regulars.
:agree the guy who did it was a cheap backstreet mechanic. my focus had a front-end hit that scuffed the bumper and knocked it out of position. he repositioned it and painted it. he has offered to sand it but he’s cheap and i don’t think i’ll bother him with it.
p.s. you mentioned color sanding; what exactly is that? :pcorn:
September 23, 2011 at 10:05 pm #33087I’d recommend dry sanding with 1500, 2000 or 2500 depending on the severity of the orange peel. With wet sanding you need to keep clearing the water as you sand to see if you’re getting the desired result. Dry sanding is safer and faster (with the right product) because you can see your work as you sand, no over sanding. That is especially important if you have little or no experience color or flat sanding a finish. If you like further advice, let me know :cheers
