If you were doing an overall respray for your own vehicle that you plan on keeping, and the clear on the hood and roof is peeling, would you take it down to the bare metal everywhere, or just the areas where the paint is compromised? This is an early 90s GM truck with factory paint.
June 3, 2010 at 6:05 pm #21744Should I strip the fenders, doors, etc also if the paint on them is ok?
June 3, 2010 at 6:24 pm #21746LOL. No. I just don’t want the durability to be compromised in any way.
I’m 99% sure the paint is OEM.
June 3, 2010 at 6:34 pm #21747I know its kind of a n00b question, but I haven’t done much work on cars. All of my jobs thus far have all been bare plastic, fiberglass or gelcoated glass as a start. That’s why I search around on here and ask questions. :woohoo:
i’m just buggin ya, :silly: no question on here should be taboo either. Unless there is several extra layers of paint on the truck then you will be fine to scuff paint without having to strip, once you get into having excessive layers like four layers of paint and up the truck will be more prone to chipping and what not.
post some pics if you can, i’d like to see the truck
Bare metal up is a ton of work.
When you’re starting to talk materials that are involved in a full bare metal up being more than the truck is worth. And then start factoring in the hours. For a 90s chevy?
Me personally. I may strip it back to the primer. But I probably wouldn’t go further than that depending on how bad the peeling actually is.June 4, 2010 at 12:55 am #21750RatStang wrote:

IF I went to bare metal, I would use the house of kolor DTM epoxy. prime, block, seal, base, clear, done. If I just scuff the paint I suppose I would use a sealer before I basecoat it. I would most likely go back with the same charcoal color it is now.

I think i like this guy already :rofl :rofl :roflI am a big fan of the 88-98 chev and gm’s. mostly the 91-94 and the 97-98’s
I would really like to get my hands on a 454SS it’s to bad they sell now for practically what they were worth new.I would definitely strip that hood to the steel. the rest of the truck do as rat suggested and take it down to the primer,
also get a fleetside box :rofl
god damn i am an a-hole today :woohoo:
seriously though nice unit, my kind of truck :pcorn:
June 4, 2010 at 2:27 am #21754Glad to be of service ding.
Dturcotte, it’s a V6 5 speed, but it runs and drives. Rather than just tearing into this thing with both wrenches blazing, I am going to keep it drivable as much as I can so I don’t run into problems transporting it. I can swap an LS1 into it in one day if I play my cards right…
I could trade someone for a fleetside in a second, but I don’t know, I’ve always wanted a step side, and they are light. 👿 Then again, a fleetside could be made into a 454ss clone. I already have a MINT condition 2 piece radio/EQ that are getting to be real rare, and tons of interior parts for this 91.
