Hey people. This may seem like a strange question but can you spray ppg deltron on top of ppg omni? I wouldn’t consider it for a customers car but it’s for my daily driver truck I’m building. Doing this would cut my bc cost by half. I’d build a base with the cheaper omni and I’d want dbc on top for better color quality.
It might work, or it might fail down the road. It is possible that the harsh solvents in the Deltron base may wrinkle the Omni base when you spray it. In any case, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Are you spraying a transparent colour? A better idea is to use the correct value shade for your primer or sealer, so that you don’t need more than 2-3 coats of colour.
So what colour are you spraying, and if you’ve primed already, what value is your primer?
Thanks for the replie! The color I’m thinking of is mazda phantom blue PC 32C. almost $800 a gallon (shop coat) the last gallon of lemans blue I bought was only $450ish. Metallica Vs pearls I guess in cost difference? I’ve sprayed deltron over omni before for a used car dealer as a under layment (close color) minimal top color was needed. Looked great but not sure on longevity. I am admittedly newer to paint (NOT BODY) work so that being said I tint my sealer using 5% with the color I’m spraying
I’ve never been able to spray a color in two coats. I find myself putting one one heavier coat and the three light coats (fear of mottling). But then again Im more of a hobbiest. I might spray only 1-4 projects a month (mostly small damage repairs). And I always think to myself,,,,, one more coat is better then reprepping and respraying. On a side note, I’m gonna talk to my paint rep about sealer shades (thanks for the advice). I guess I could mix up some left over blues and green deltron to get a close enough base shade and use omni for my cut ins only since I plan on keeping this truck a long time.
If you have other blues in Deltron that you can use for your first coat, do that. I know the blue you are using, and it can be transparent (although I’m not sure how transparent it is in Deltron).
I remember with some brands of solvent base, we sometimes only used 1/2 the reducer in the first coat to help hiding/coverage. It doesn’t really cut down on product use, but does save a little time.
Using the correct shade of sealer or primer is probably your best bet.
I think that the important point here is that there should be absolutely no difference in colour between the Omni and the Deltron, assuming of course that you are using the same variant. The Deltron’s advantage is that it contains more of whatever colours are in it and the tinters are stronger while the Omni is a little “weaker” and may require an extra coat to get the same coverage level. Deltron has a place in higher volume shops where coverage can be obtained in 1.5 – 2 coats and it has fairly fast flash times so that booth usage can be held to a minimum and productivity increased. The Omni may be a little slower but in a hobbyist application the time isn’t such an issue, nor is the need to use a third coat. Three coats of Omni, though, will probably cost a lot less than two coats of Deltron.
I would use the Omni and go with 2.5 coats over a Value Shade 7 base (primer or sealer). You may only need 2 coats but check on a spray out card first.
One problem I recently found with Omni is when I sprayed my friends camry last month. The color was so far off it wasn’t even blendable. My paint rep said that there were no variants in that color in the omni line. So I got deltron. I am doing a full respray on my truck so I probably will go with Omni. Thanks for the input.
Amateur question,,, what is a half coat mean? Drop coat?

This is not true. Omni is well known for poor color matching.I’ll stand corrected then, Scott. While we have Deltron, the cheaper line here is Cobra and colour matches in that are identical to Deltron for the same colour and variant. I use Cromax in the shop and it’s exactly the same situation there with the cheaper L400 and 610 colours being the same as the premium 6000 line. The only difference being, as I said, that sometimes an extra coat is required.
Here’s the non variant omni compared to the stock color (middle stripe). Maybe omni gold has variants? If they still have it. I use deltron 95% of the time anyway
