I just opened my shop and I have narrowed down my choice between two paint lines. Spies or RM Diamont . I have tried both basecoats and really like the RM but it does not seem to cover as well as the Spies. Looking for opinions

i have been using diamont for about 10 years. sprays good, matches are good not that i do alot of matching. great metallic control. its quite expensive however so is spies. diamont is a great line and i dont know anyone who has been unhappy with it. is it the best for coverage, probably not but its not bad at coverage either. i do know someone who has used both and said the spies does cover better. i dont think you can wrong either way. compare cost of the two and take that into consideration. spies i believe is a two price system or something like that. one for solids and one for metallics so you will make out price wise with some colors compared to diamont. imo diamont has just gotten out of hand with the prices.

I used Diamont for quite a few years and it didn’t leave me much to complain about, most people here seem to speak well of it. I’ve never used Spies so I couldn’t say how it compares. I can say in the water equivalents in shops that went from RM Onyx to Dupont/Axalta Cromax, many complained of significantly higher costs (in my area anyway). Spies being the premium line I would imagine it costs even more, I’d demo them both as long as you can and then look at the math.

Where I am there has been a lot of shops that went spies after our jobber switched paint lines. But I’ve heard a lot of disappointed customers cause of cost and color match with the spies
