I have a Nason sealer but it was 1k used straight out of can. I just bought my first gal of 2 K and it is white. You European guy’s seem to seal everything so I figure I would try. I would have shot directly over the VW blue. Often I will use 1 coat of a good hiding “like” color leftover from a previous job before spraying the correct match to get it close.

What do you put on new partsNovember 7, 2012 at 3:34 am #38934Ding, If I get an aftermarket preprimed black wing or fender. I usually just base clear it after 6oo water sand. If it is to be a light metallic silver on a higher end, I could grey 2K prime over 400 grit and then 600 wet for final before paint. I used my 1K sealer to HOLD back under work, or to PROVE the surface. If I prime any surface with 2K, block and water sand with 600, I can paint any color base clear with confidence. Some of the jobs I get need to be quickies…but I cannot paint over old pinholed…cracked, checked, of crow footed substrate. If the 1 or 2K sealer will lay down… so should the paint..My thought of sealer is a shortcut… Painting over well prepped primer has always worked best for me. I don’t read the speck sheets.. I just use what works for me. If I could get rid of the damn dust speck particles.. I could be “out of the gun” 90 percent of the time. Remember .. I have to do 2-3-4 cars a week with only 1 helper, so I have to use quick acting procedures. Bill
November 7, 2012 at 4:38 am #38948Using sealer is not a short cut,if your not using sealer on after market or oem parts that is just dumb. Many if not all manufacturers warranty (paint and automobile manufactures) will be void if you don’t use it.A good 2k urethane sealer will improve adhession, stone chip resistance and overall durability of a replacement part.1k sealer is junk ,come on man read the TDS sheets and get with the times. How can you offer a warranty at your shop if you don’t know about the products your using
November 8, 2012 at 2:39 am #38956Dont take this the wrong way, But you really need to read your tech sheets. The methods you described are backyard at best. I commend you for what you are trying to do and the effort involved, but it doesnt take any longer or cost anymore to do things the proper way and it will only improve your quality and your business.
November 8, 2012 at 2:50 am #38957No offence taken. I started this business in the backyard! .The reason I’m here is because I WANT to do better. I’ll check my new data that came with the sealer. How long should I expect the 2k saeler to dry before I base it? I found out the hard way if you paint over the Nason etch primer too soon it stains the topcoats with bleed through 😡
November 8, 2012 at 3:06 am #38958Not sure what you have for sealer. The tech sheet will tell you. usually a minimum 15-20 minutes. 1k sealer should not be used. you really need to seal new replacement parts. the e-coat primer that comes on them is not meant to be based directly upon. Your tech sheets will tell you that as well. Also sealing over checked or cracked paint will enure you a failure down the road. Faulty paint needs to be removed. Your paint job is only as good as what is underneath
November 8, 2012 at 3:15 am #38960I don’t know if any one does the same as me but. I’d use a ultra sealer or wet on wet then put my base over that. I’ve got in the habit of keeping left over mixed base, as it being silver and it will be inside and out on the bonnet I tend to use a left over silver first for the underside of it bonnet then put my mixed la7w base on top. I only do colours that take a lot to cover or having to paint under or inside new panels
November 8, 2012 at 3:28 am #38961
. Your paint job is only as good as what is underneath
Exactly… I tell my customers.. “if you paint over crap, you still have crap” My shop is empty right now and that is ok with me today. I knew and old man, rest his sole, that sealed everything. I’ll be starting a new topic just as soon as I get my next job. I had to go to a different supplier to get this 2K… I got the Matrix 2K Accushade sealer. says you can nib sand it after 15, “wet on wet” application lays flat.. Yall’ have any experience with this one? They only had it in white, I bet they can get a black too and you get the color you want by mixing.

I have guys that work at dealerships and want to work here. They mix up 3 times of what they need because… they don’t have to pay for it 👿 Dollar saved….

November 8, 2012 at 3:40 am #38964That’s how I learnt to teach my self to mix under coats and tints, by using left over paint. It helps me out. I can’t afford to just mix and dump the waste 🙂
November 8, 2012 at 3:43 am #38965Shur ‘nough I should check more data sheets. This is what I have ..unopened white. http://www.matrixsystem.com/products.php?t2=9
November 8, 2012 at 3:49 am #38966I’ve never heard of matrix, I’ve only used rm, the guy which started to show me how to paint left 2months after I started, so I didn’t get trained up as you should. Know I’ve been doing it for 10 yrs and still learning. The guy showed me how to prime. He sed copy me so I did as he was right handed 🙂 after three yrs someone said aren’t you left handed lol which I am so after 10 yrs I paint with both ha ha
November 8, 2012 at 3:58 am #38967:rofl :woohoo: You got me on that one! The Matrix is very much like the RM. I used RM base for years and learnt that if it is silver use Diamont..The RM base you use lays wet right? I was using the enamel basecoat product. Yes.. that really is me in my avitar.
