The old man just picked up a boat similar to Bondomerchants, I’ll post some pics tommorow. But anyhow, the paint is severely faded and we are going to paint it something funky. So the questions are:

    1. Is their anything I should know about painting a boat that differs from another piece of fiberglass in automotive.

    2. What kind of paint job would look good on it?

i like using ss acrylic urethanes on em an keeping the colors simple solid ones basic themes with like wimbleton white whith a contrasting stripe on the side mabey frt deck ss urethanes seem ta hold up better on a boat than base an clears when ya bump the docks or beach em

here is a link with a ton of boat ideas for you. this used to use all basf on his stuff. about a year ago switched to akzo. anyway will give you some ideas. there is nothing really special you need to know. put epoxy primer over the gelcoat and go through your normal procedure. one thig though, you dont really paint all the way to the edge of the chine. run a 1/4″ piece of fineline on the edge so you base and clear end 1/4″ up. this keep the water and travel lift straps from beating the edge if the paint and chipping it all up. if your just doing a solid color then go with a ss urethane like bondo recommended otherwise bc/cc works fine. all the boats in this gallery are all bc/cc.

The current plan is to paint the top half (metal bar up) a high metallic red from the basf carizzma line. What do you guys think?

ya jimmo that would look good, do some stripes down the sides and the engine cover also. Them windows need some limo tint too. That little boat has good lines and will look sharp with a nice paint job.

I bet you would be amazed at what just polishing that gel coat will look like with a good wool pad and some Migures heavy cut cleaning buffing compound would do too it.
It will look like New I swear

Get it back on the water in less than a weekend before season is over.

Not trying to talk you out of painting it but season is almost over, that’s what winters are for.

Besides there’s nothing better than just leaving the Original Gel coat alone on Fiberglass.

Looks like a good candidate for some custom graphics. 🙂
