hey guys im contemplating whether to paint car myself or pay to have it done. i have never painted a car before so i would appreciate honesty.
im painting same color (black) i have fairly large areas of clear coat deteriation. should i sand these spots to the metal then prime.
ive never done this before and i cannot afford a $1000-$1500 paint job.it seems no one will answer my questions. if you can help i would be very greatfull. thanks keep up the great workFebruary 1, 2012 at 9:34 pm #35670If you’ve got someone that’ll respray your car and do a decent job for that 1000-1500 price range, jump on it.
You’ll easily spend that much and more acquiring tools and equipment to do it yourself.
What tools do you have now?
do you have a space to paint this car?if you have all the tools already
and all materials like sandpaper, tape , masking paper , cleaners and you just need to buy the paint then you will be close to 300-500 for just paint and clearcoat
If you go to a local paint supply store maybe one that sells PPG Omni/shopline paint and just ask what for some prices to get an Idea. it can be any paint supplier does not have to be PPG can be Dupont , heck Kirker , Summit racing , all kinds of paint out there should be able to find some thing in your price range
1 gallon of primer
hardener for primer
depending on size of car may need 1 gallon of basecoat (if its a solid color look at a single stage paint then no need for the clear coat ) you said it was black but didn’t say if it had any pearl or metallic in it
1 gallon Reducer for basecoat
1 gallon of clear coat
hardener for clear coat
1 gallon of Wax and grease remover , 1 gallon of acetone for clean up of tools You probrably could get away with just a quart of these itemsFebruary 2, 2012 at 3:42 am #35676You left out the most important item; “the know how”, I think you be better off if you have the car painted, it’s gone to cheaper at the end.
February 2, 2012 at 5:28 am #35680
well you got to learn somehow how are people supposed to learn anything when all your advice tells them to have someone else do it.
I’m all for learning through the DIY route…..but most all people don’t learn to swim when pushed into the deep end!
Suggest if the OP really wants to paint, he/she start small and practice on some test panels. Even then, it’s a big step up from painting a panel to an entire car!
February 2, 2012 at 6:51 am #35684if you want to learn because you think you might like doing this, thats great. but if you want to do it just to save $1000 it aint gonna happen

:agree This is not a job you will get right the first time. no matter how much practice. Until you spray the whole thing. that is how you gain the experience to build on.
I guess you could just use a paint roller and some tractor paint , can have your car painted for under 100.00 (just a tip use a foam roller)
