I have seen lots of people that have base coated the doors, trunk, and hood jambs before the rest of the car, then install them on the car and sand off the over spray and paint the whole car then clear it.
My question is, I thought you had to clear within 24 hours after basing? I noticed that people have gone a while and got back to painting the rest of the car later. Don’t you have to scuff the old base with something to get the clear to stick good?
If so, is this recommended? What is the best way to scuff it? Like the hard places around hinges.
March 16, 2010 at 9:50 am #20170i heard the longer you wait to clear after basecoat the smoother it will turn out.
i thought the window to clear basecoat was like 7 days or something like that. if you scuff youll have to reapply the basecoat so its best to clear within its recommended time frame.
if its a solid color like black ill spray the jambs and car as a unit including clear and spray the doors off the car. then reassemble. other then that its best like u said to spray the basecoat, assemble, spray the out side of the car in base, then clear inside and out. if you do it that way you’ll need to mask the jambs up pretty good so the masking paper doesnt stick to the doors as u close them slightly.
The window to clear over your base really depends on the system your using. Some systems are as little as 24 hours and some very well may be up to 7 days. Another thing that varies from system to system is what you must do for adhesion after you exceed your window, with most of them you have to scuff your base and shoot another coat before clear. I know with PPG EHP once you miss the 48 hour window you have to apply additional base before clear, but you don’t have to sand it! Best way to know is to check your systems tech sheets :rock
