I’m I newbie to autobody. I have a 2005 f150 and I’m repainting the tail gate. It is a true metallic paint and I am currently waiting for the paint. The tail gate has scratches in different areas and 2 small dents. I wanted to know your opinion if I should try to spot blend all those areas then clear coat the whole tail gate, or paint the whole tailgate itself. If I was to paint the whole tailgate would it be neccessary to blend the rear quarter panels? Please give me your best advice towards this project. Thank you

First do a spray out card, and see if the color is a true match.
To do a spray out card you need to follow all the tech recommendations, and apply clear coat over the card.
Check the color for variations.. if it is a true match, then no blending in adjacent panels is needed.
I would do full spraying and clearing because it gives the best protection.

I don’t try to blend each little repair, rather try to keep the repairs as far from the edges as possible and then blend basecoat towards the edges (in this case just the two sides) without going all the way. The edges will then be the original colours and you won’t see the gradual change towards the repair(s). Not possible on every job, I know, but better than having to paint the sides as well if you can get away with it.

We live in a world of hope that there is such a thing as a “perfect” match, Martin. Just about every job should be blended, and then cleared right across the panel.

There are a couple of pretty deep scratches on the left side of the panel. Would I be able to get away with blending the ends anyway?

Hard to say without seeing it.

The left side is worse than the right.

Left side would be hard to keep away from the edge. Right side from the picture looks blendable. If I were doing this job I would not blend the bedside but I have a mixing system and a paint camera. Make a test panel as already suggested. If it looks good try to stay away from the edges as much as possible. The left side will probably have base to the edge but it doesn’t have to be full coverage so it may not shift the color much. Also there are plenty of things to draw your eye away from the match such as the stripe tail light top cover. Good luck.

Purchase the color.. do a spray out card.. see if it matches.. if not go back to the paint shop and ask them to tint the color to match as precisely as they can.

Another thing.. what do you plan to do with the stripe? I see there is a scratch on the stripe..??

Yeah I’m thinking I’m going to paint the whole tailgate and hit the ends of it with
A mist as lightly as possible to keep the factory color there. As
For the pinstripe it is a vinyl stick on pin stripe so I. WIll be taking that off painting then putting a new one on.
