I think here, in Canada & the US, Dynabrade is probably the most popular brand. Hutchins was popular as well, but their units are getting a little outdated, though still reliable. 3M has had one for a few years that is nice to use. I have used the Blue Point one a few times and it seems decent. I’ve gone the slightly cheaper route and use a Chicago Pneumatic DA and it works fine.

Pretty well, most of the name brand units are decent. Keep away from the cheaper ones, and try one out first if you can. They are all slightly different in weight/size, so finding something comfortable is important.

Another thing to consider is the orbit size.

Since you’re from the UK Sach I’d highly recommend Mirka sanders. We’ve had 4 of them at work for 4 years now. They are on the go most of the day and we haven’t had a single failure yet. We also have one of their 2.5mm orbit finish sanders, and one of the mini 77mm units.

I also own a large and small one myself, which again have never given me any trouble.

ROS650CV is the one to go for if you’re only having one, or the DB model if you want it to catch some dust 🙂

If you don’t have a large compressor or simply prefer electric, look at their CEROS sanders. Amazing little tools with much more power than you’d imagine!!

I’m loving the new Hutchins model 500 and 600.

Way more power than anything else I’ve tried and much smoother.

Thanks Andy was look at the ROS650CV was not to sure on it i might speak to the MK Paints rep see what price, so far cheapest i seen is at http://www.restexpress.co.uk/acatalog/Mirka_Air_Orbital_Sanders.html Do you dry sand primer for base? or still 800/1000 wet?

    Thanks

    We dry sand wherever possible.

Sometimes I don’t think you can beat a bit of wet sanding for more feel on a complex shape, but on the whole we sand our primer with 500 on the DA, or 400 for dark or solid colours.

I’ve got a snap on da at home but prefer the mirka one I use at work, both fine orbit. To be honest if I could go back and buy myself one again I would go for a mirka.

I’ve gotta say, I LOVE the assilex fine paper (more like cloth) from Eagle abrasives. It’s so flexible it makes the edges a dream by sanding dry.

I’m really happy with everything I have tried from them.

I have the snap on that you are looking at. They do pretty decent but I have had to send mine in twice. If I had to do it again I would have bought the dynabrade. The snap on one only has a year warranty so if it starts making any noises get it sent in before it runs out.
