Would like to know best idea of painting from pinstripe down on a requarter of a caravan instead of blending within quarter. So not to worry about blend peeling back 6 months down the road Any opinions would be great.. My thoughts was to back tape over pinstripe so not to get a hard edge. And feather clear to it. Far as the base was going to blend that within quarter panel.. Problem is wondering about a reaction of clear beside the painted on pinstripe.(which dont know the type of paint used just know its hand painted pinstripe and has no gloss to it)

Not sure what year of caravan your are talking about (or what colour), but why not just paint the whole 1/4 and be done with it. They aren’t a large panel.

As for the pinstripe, you could sand it off then repaint it after (or go cheap and use vinyl). Or you could scuff it and clear over it.

I seem to recall the that its been over 10+ years since Chrysler was using the painted stripes…

Reason why im doing from pinstrip down is because the pinstripe is painted on. And it can not be sanded at all. Plus it has a design to it,not just a striaght pinstripe. And i can’t free hand stripping. (2003 dodge caravan.) I had to replace the dog legs and some minor rust on wheel well. Was thinking of bleanding but new at that process. And didnt want to make more work for myself. Cause the thought of back taping on upper body line wheel arch and blending front edge where body line fades. and color sand and buff doesnt sound like good idea. And a blend lenth of quarter above wheel arch doesnt seem like be easy for a person new at blending. (plus wouldnt think be good idea) But really open for opinions.Would be so much easier if pinstripe was not their. So thats why considered back tape on pinstripe and bleend base and clear from stripe down. And yes little undesided if clear will react to pinstripe or vice versa….. Color of van is a light blue metalic

I painted for used car dealers for years. I painted a lot of pinstripe up jobs. Some, I would remove one stripe and make the cut between, then replace the upper strip. In your case, an older vehicle, I would just back tape it and then use a thin tape for the cutoff, like 3M’s green plastic fineline, and then pull it while the clear is still very wet. That will let the edge soften a bit. You may want to cut it at the upper edge of the stripe so they are under the clear. You will have a little edge but.. well it’ll be ok.

Maybe if you post a picture of your 1/4 and your fancy looking pinstripe, I could come up with something else.

Have you thought of just doing the whole thing any way (removing the pin stripe) and taking it into a shop to re-do the stripe for you?

My last thought was to tape off and then use fine line pinstripe. So be a small edge instead of masking tape that gives a harder edge. And the idea of pealing off when wet seem to be a good idea as well. Thanks for info and thoughts so far i will try to take picture tomorrow and see if i can post on here. Again thanks for thought and any more whould be great thank you guys…

I will mask off the painted pinstripe, blend out the color as needed, unmask the stripe and clear the whole panel….No edge and nobody can tell the difference.I have done way to many dodges like that in my lifetime 😉

Thats what I keep saying, clear the whole thing. That is what we usually did at the Chrysler dealer as well. 🙂

I believe if I clear over striping i will get a reaction. The pinstripe is not on their that well you can scrape off with finger nail. Like I posted befor hand painted (blue/purple stripe which not a common color for pinstipe at local paint supply shop or automotive stores in Maine. Last van I did had a hell of a time finding simple white pinstripe in size i needed. Ended up buying online.

Why are you asking for help if your going to do what you want anyway :S Its simple mask it off or reproduce it with vinyl pinstripe.Your not going to get a reaction…..

I know design is nothing special but i can not free hand and color match be doughtfull and as stated befor it comes off real easy.

Clear the whole panel or roll the tape off the body line below the stripe. It isn’t that complicated. Of the stripe was fpnna wrinkle and fall off, all these guys wouldn’t be telling you to do it

OK here is option #2…if you say that you can scrape it off with a fingernail get some lacquer thinner and wipe the stripe off the quarter. Then get some vinyl stripe and completely pinstripe both sides….
