peeling paint

Got a friend of mine that is painting a 64 Vette show/drag car. The car was decent but wasnt up to the owners standards so they decided to repaint it before laying 3 layers of flames. The guy doing the repairs finished all of his primer with 320 then wet sanded with 600 grit and washed the car down with a red mirka skuff pad and dawn dishwashing soap before he taped it and put it in the booth.
He applied his Nason basecoat over the primer (so sealer) then applied 2 coats of clear and let dry overnight. Put on 2 coats of clear and let dry about 10 hours, sanded all the areas that he was to put flames on with 800 grit and applied the flames. When he went to pull the tape for the flames it pulled an area about 6 in x6 in down to the primer.
Any ideas what caused this? And any ideas on what to do to prevent this? I am thinking that he still had some trapped solvents in the first basecoat ( he had to put down about 4 coats of base to get coverage) And he did not use the hardner that is made for the nason base. I am thinking that he should go around the car and check for adhesion issues before he gets to much farther into this job. I told him to take some 2 in masking tape and stick it to the car and see if he has anything else popping off. He just doesnt want to get into 2 more sets of flames and have this thing start popping paint everywhere. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

In Nason base, the hardener is not optional. That will cause the issue right there.

What do you think that he should do from this point on? I was kinda wondering about the hardener myself but I dont know anyone that uses Nason that puts the stuff in. I seriously doubt that the place that even sells the stuff even sells a gallon of it a year.I had told him that he should put hardener in all the colors on this thing from here on out just to minimize any issues that might come up.

If it was me I would rather check for adhesion issues and deal with it now rather than have it come back with an irate customer. If that meant having to remove all paint and re-prime and re-paint so be it.

Just got back from looking at the Vette, just the one spot peeled on it. He checked the car over to see if any other spots are going to lift and I think that he is going to be alright. I think what the issue was that his basecoat wasnt dry enough. Looked like he had a little to much build in one spot and it was still soft. He is going to build that spot up a little with some clear and then the next set of flames will go right over the top of it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire thing eventually peels. The Nason base needs the hardener. Without it, the base will only gel up and gets to be like latex paint.

Sometimes it’s just easier to do it right the second time around
