Hey Guys
Wanted to share a little bit of where I do my work. Being 23 years old and still saving, I still live at home and work out of my garage. Luckily my parents are very neat and I have followed the same routine as well. I am very limited on space on my side of the garage so I have a very condensed working area. Hopefully my work space will give you guys some ideas. These pictures are to show you how I work out of the garage and the area I am given. This is all until I get my own my place. I have to thank my Dad for letting me do all this. My Mom doesn’t even know what a compressor is.
Here is my Air Setup. It is a 30 gallon Air Compressor, Oiled. It is fantastic for the small work I do. It even runs a DA sander without lag. I have 20 feet of 3/4” black iron pipe going to my work area on a upward angle which means a downward angle back to the compressor. The black iron piping helps to cool down the air before it hits my air dryer. Once the piping gets to my shelf it hits a newly installed set of pipes that whips it around a few times to further help out with cooling that air before the air dryer gets it. I also have two drop off lines with valves; should there be any moisture issues. I wanted to put in a well built system to eliminate moisture issues. Everything is fed into the hose reel after the dryer.

So this is my shelf that my dad and I put in about 2 years back. It has slowly filled up and I have just about out grown it. Top shelf is all for paint and the lower shevles host my body fillers, sandpapers, and cleaners. My buffer pads are held on by a 65 cent nail that I got from Lowe’s. This shelf easily gets out of hand when I am fiberglassing and pulling items from it. I keep my paint guns in their packaging in the bottom right corner.

Here is where I paint usually. I usually do the basecoat outside and clear inside under the light. I just installed the light. I hooked it up with extra chain to extend it downward. In the pictures below you can see how nicely it installs when it is stored. That is my stand with a home depot long wood paint mixing stick. I attach alligator clips to hold my pieces out past my stand so that it is in mid air away from the stand, away from possible dust.

Here is my Dad’s work bench and pretty much where I spent most of my time working on little things. Here is where my dad taught me all I ever knew about anything and then I started to take over with fiberglass and paint and he is just in awe now. Hey look, its a 3 gallon compressor hidding.

So here is the garage from a-far, pretty big because we keep it clean and open. It is fully functional. I paint the floor about every 6 months with the epoxy floor coating. Oh yea, Got to have the refrigrator. I go through soda like crazy!

February 15, 2010 at 7:42 am #19575Looks nice man I paint in a booth at work but i would love a setup like yours if I had a garage. Hey by the way do you wet the floor down before you paint.I read your have contamination problems it couldnt hurt.Just make sure its wet not flooded nothing is worse than slapping the hose on the ground and having water hit your 2nd coat of clear. :cens
AnonymousFebruary 15, 2010 at 7:49 am #19576Cool setup nex, good thing you’ve got the Iwata’s…. find they produce less overspray then most guns. Need to drill a fan out the side or top so you can tackle some completes, neighbors may not like it though… looks like your well equipt!
^ I actually got a hold on my contamination issues! completely gone.
Not sure what it came from but now I am using PPG wax and grease remover; solvent based and water based. I switched over to prep wipes and I use the w&G all the time. I also started to use palmolive orignal before anything. To add to that i added that whole twist of piping behind the storm shutters, replaced the air dyer cartiage and added a new in line filter/dryer right before the gun.
With all of that, my issues are completely gone, it is so nice to finally be able to learn how to paint.
For wetting the floor. I take my squirt bottle and spray down the floor and my stand. Not drench, but just enough. Oh yea.. I also have been taking my shirt off to cut down on dust..
February 15, 2010 at 7:59 am #19578Awesome glad to hear you solved it….use a suit man. I just started to and love it.

With the iwata there is like no overspray!. I wont be painting cars in my garage. Biggest thing I will paint is a bumper but I like the idea of a fan, but a $15 box fan is out of the question(explosion). Any suggestions on a non explosion fan? I wanted to build a mini paint booth but it just is not worth it for every time i have to paint. i wish they had a blow up small one.I wanted to show you all my setup since we all sort of know where we come from by now
February 15, 2010 at 4:10 pm #19582you know i painted my first bike in my inlaws garage like that. one of the colors i mixed in this glo powder. 10 years later, to this day you can walk around in their garage with the lights off and see where you are going. overspray stuck to everything!!
February 15, 2010 at 4:45 pm #19583Nice set up there. Not sure about all that soda in the fridge though
