let’s see who’s smart. we all know plastic never matches. but will they usually be darker or lighter when you refinish a bumper and quarter? solids and metallic? hmmmm

Well that would depend on the primer color used. Some use black some use Yellow

That is a wives tale, the reason bumpers,moldings/door handles, don’t match on a new car is they are painted in different places and times at the factory. When I spray a bumper with a car they match bang on.Lay the bumper the same as it is going to be mounted on the car when you spray it and you will be fine.

Well Jason, we must use a different kind of plastic over here as I’ve had many mismatches between metal and plastic.

Yes I know what you’re saying about the plastics being painted elsewhere is true, but many times I have painted bumpers that are still physically attached to the car, and painted the adjoining metal panel, and they are off colour. So that’s using the same paint, same spraying conditions, same panel orientation, even the same pass from the same spray gun, and the colour looks different

I admit, I have absolutely no idea why, but it happens. I’ve even 2k primed both areas at the same time, sanded it back, and painted over that to ensure a perfect substrate match, but even that doesn’t always help :deadhorse

It’s just something I’ve gotten used to :rofl

andyt i’ve had the same problem as you did on a few cars. same paint, done at same time but for some reason, a lil difference.

of corse, jay is useing water, so color matches are 10x’s better. and when we switched to water matches are just about perfect.in the last 2 1/2 yrs of useing it, i’ve redone 5 covers, but that was due to the color variant being off.

alot of times it depends on the plastics you get, am, oem, reman (wich remans usually seem to be the ones that don’t match when refinishing with the car at the same time)… as we all know plastics are like our skin, we sweat our pours open to cool off, same concept, expect the paint gets soaked into the plastic.

jay is also right about the plastics from the factory, painted at different times, some atleast a month ahead of the car.

in regaurds to water, light metallics, under certain lighting conditions and angles, and super anal analyzing, I can almost always see something… and yes sprayed and prepped together the same way

Sorry man I disagree, been painting for 25 years, water for 2.5 yrs.The only way you might have a difference is the metallics lay different in relation to how the bumper is on the rack when you paint it vs how it mounts on the car.I have used at least a dozen different paint systems over the years and I am super anal and I have never had a problem :stoned

I’m with you 2. I’ve never had an issue, solvent water, different paint lines. I always use anti-static cleaner. I suppose it is possible that some colours are having the metallics lay a little different due to static build up on the bumper. But again, I’ve never had/seen that myself, and even with anti-static cleaner I know I have sprayed over some pretty staticy parts at times.

No worries mate, I’ll get some pictures up next time I have one so you can let me know what you think.

It’ll probably turn out to be something I’ve been doing wrong all these years :rofl

Ben – that’s the only thing I could ever put it down to – static. But if the plastic parts is attached to the car then they should really have the same amount of charge, so that was that idea shot down :hunt :silly:

I’ve obviously had bumpers not match the body when butting. But when painting the body and bumper, no problems.

Im with jay and ben on this one. Never ever had a bumper off from the body solvent or water. Why would it if its the same batch of paint with the same amount of coats?
