Wasnt sure if this should be in bodywork or refinish forum..but here goes. Doing a 75 vette sanded original paint off . Is it acceptable to top on raw fiberglass with polyester primer I think it is called slick sand by evercoat. And then long block to work out imperfections? afterwords topping with a 2K? I do not have alot of experience with poly primers. in fact this will be the 2nd time using it. ty. Ken from Coachworks.

I am hearing good things about Clausen All-U-Need polyester primer. Anyone here used it before?

May 23, 2012 at 2:09 am #36982No can’t say that I have,I wonder if you can get it here.I have used slick sand and upol reface and they seemed to work very well for me.Sprayable polyesters are great for a rough body but many people really abuse them :p

I’m going to look for some of the Clausen, the new compliant Slick Sand needs epoxy on any bare metal larger than 1″. It doesn’t seem to kick like the old stuff did either.
May 23, 2012 at 3:09 am #36984Try this Evercoat product.. it’s a polyester and has fiberglass in it.

May 23, 2012 at 6:36 am #36986I just used a gal of the new 4-1 Evercoat. They have two different versions of it a regular build and a high build. The high build can be used over bare metal without etch or epoxy. I havent used any of the G2 version but I hear that it works real well. Per Sikkens TDS sheets raw fiberglass should not be covered with 2k primer without some sort of barrier. They recommend polyprime. And it is recommended that it be cleaned with acetone not normal wax and grease remover. Just had a 78 ElCamino in the garage that the guy wanted in black epoxy and it still had the factory paint on it. Didnt want to put the money out to strip it and it wouldnt feather out so we put two coats of Evercoat 4-1 on it blocked it with a DA and 180 then put two coats of black epoxy on it. Turned out great. I dont think that I would paint over it without epoxy or 2k but some of the manufacturers recommend it.

May 23, 2012 at 10:32 am #36989I use the Upol Reface. It works really well, but you need a 3mm tip to apply it.
After sanding, before you lay your DG or COB, you do need to use either a 2K highfill, or a 2K epoxy such as PPG D834 ‘DP40’.
I would not apply topcoat directly onto the poly!
