3000 and 4000 are faster drying than 2021 and 2042. Not better just more suited for a production shop.

I have used 4000, 2002, 2021 and 2042. The only one I liked were 2002 and 2021. The 2042 sprayed fine but died a few days later. The 4000 wasn’t anything impressive to me. If spraying in open conditions 3000 and 4000 would be better or possibly 2082.

like ryan said. 3000 is good for non booth conditions. 4000 never really impressed me
2042 dies and is very yellow.
2002 and 2021 are about their best clears.
if you want to use ppg then pick one of those 2

like i said 2002 has done me well for my all overs. for the nicest flow out i like to use dt95 reducer takes a little longer to dry, but i don’t have to worry about orange peel.

as noted 3000 is best for air drying, i like the 4000,it reminds me of a fast drying 2021. we quit useing 2042 becuase if its dieing issue but mainly, the yellowing problem. but you would want to use 2042 for a all over dries too fast.

as for a top clear the only brand i know of is house of color, maybe duponts glamor clear, i’m sure ppg has something, but these clears are best for show cars, not something you’ll drive on a daily basis. it’s not practicall to spend that much for a dd car.

yes its dt895 i saw on tcp global… is there really a difference in reducers? between slow and warm and medium and fast? other than drying times?

    December 13, 2010 at 4:57 pm #26165

Yes there is a difference in reducers. Doing an all over it is nice to go a little bit slower than normal but don’t make too big of a step. If you are spraying at 75 degrees use the 85 degree reducer or maybe cocktail the 75 and 85. I don’t think it is a very good idea to go real slow. You are going to start messing with viscosity. You can slow one down too much also. Your clear should flash in 5-7 minutes normally. If it’s taking 20 minutes between coats you can make a real mess out of a job not to mention it can result in not enough milage because you have to apply so timidly. To make it even more complicated airflow and humidity will play a part also.

what other clears do you guys recommend that have that wet look all the time, i know shoplines jc7200 european clear looks wet and glossy! any other recommendations?

    December 14, 2010 at 6:25 am #26180

any nice clear will look wet if sprayed or buffed correct. The basecoat color plays a big role also. Certain toners in a mix will be clean and some dirty. The dirtier the color the worse it will look once cleared.

If I was going to recommend a clear that has a very nice appearance I would recommend Spies Hecker 8035 or Sikkens Superior 250. The Sikkens is only for waterborne basecoat so if your using solvent go with the Spies.

Another option is House of Kolor UC35. It’s a really nice looking clear. You can get a close match to most OEM colors using HOK also, so keep their basecoat in mind also. HOK products are not too pricey either.

Shopline,Omni,Nason,Dimension….these are all decent low-mid grade solvent base/clear systems. :deadhorse
Not sure about any low end water bases.
Call your local supplier that carries one of these and you should come out well under 700 bucks.

i already got an estimate from local store, it came out to $550 for DBU paint and PPG 2002 clear, i am not going to shoot omni or shopline basecoat on my car… awful paints, just plain awful! im thinking of getting DBC paint instead of DBU! as a student i get 10% discount at most paint stores around here! :rock and 50% from snap-on:rock :rock :rock :rock :rock 👿
