I have stripped the trucks body to bare metal, the staff @ ppg paint store recommended dp60 over bare metal, paint guys said i’ll have release issues with epoxy over bare metal. I thought about using ppg etch primer and dp60 over, however I have heard there will be issues with that.
December 2, 2012 at 7:34 am #39586Welcome aboard. What paint guys? DPLF is designed to go over properly prepped bare metal. It can be used with DX1791 for maximum adhesion and performance. Odd a company has an epoxy that needs another product to perform it’s best. It can’t be used with other etches. Read the TDS. I stopped using DPLF shortly after the old DP was discontinued. Right now I use RM EP epoxies. Others here will provide their product choices.
Sorry, My paint guy. He uses ppg product and requested I use a ppg primer after I stripped the trucks body. I went to the local ppg store and they recommended dp60, soooo after I bought the primer the painter said I would have paint release problems using an epoxy on bare metal. So I’m kind of stuck at a loss.
December 2, 2012 at 7:53 am #39588No offense to you, your paint guy is wrong and I’d be worried about what else he does not know. Soda blasting can cause adhesion problems no matter what paint is used. How did you get to bare metal?
Soda blasting was my first pick, however they had went out of business before I had a chance to use them, I used aircraft stripper and a fiber wheel. I have been searching for another paint guy, the one I had lined up has to many irons in the fire. He does work, just very busy with all his non body shop projects.
December 2, 2012 at 10:26 pm #39605What were your post aircraft stipper prep procedures for the metal?
Nothing more than disassembly, and keeping it away from any seams, I used it on the outside bed of the truck, then went to fiber wheel after that mess. Cab, hood, front fenders, and door have all been fiber wheel, then finished with 80 grit on a da. Fiber wheel would melt leaving plastic stuck to the bare metal.
December 3, 2012 at 11:47 pm #39638You need to inspect every nook and crany and every square inch of the metal to make SURE there isn’t any surface rust..if there is remove it, obviously. Then degrease and apply the epoxy ASAP. Rust starts at the microscopic level…just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it hasn’t already started.
Whatever your “paint guy” has been telling you, disregard it and I wouldn’ take the car to him or ever ask him for advice on paint/bodywork. Epoxy it now.
December 4, 2012 at 3:27 am #39639Dp is fine to use over bare metal, u don’t want to use etch with it. Dp has it’s own etching properties. I have used it for yrs over bare metal, no adhession problems, sounds like your paint guy does improper prep for dp not to adhere.
