I will be getting a few Gallons of this stuff just wanted to know a lil about it before I jump in. I can’t find anything saying not to spray it over sovlent, But I guess if no one replies I will just give it a whirl and tell ya how it turns out haha

August 6, 2011 at 9:49 am #32116I have not talked to one painter who likes these clears,I tried the 750 and didn’t like it very finicky. You are better off with the concept clears like 2021 or 2002.Not sure I would trust it over solvent as it was designed for waterborne.Just doing a sprayout is not a good enough test,it could delam after a year or 2,not right away.
thanks for the reply , I don’t know of anyone who has used it. besides that I have only see a few videos on youtube and some blog that says use a 3000RP with a 1.2 tip at 35PSI
I am getting Setup for Envirobase but I would Like to use the clear on DBC if I could but if not no big deal.
August 6, 2011 at 3:59 pm #32119I have used the EC700 and it kinda sucks. I used a 3000RP 1.2 with it and it still sucked. At best it was a factory peel matching clear. It either wanted to look dry and meely after baking or it was running. It took forever to harden up also. Even after baking it wasnt hard. I have not talked to anyone either that likes it at all. You can still use 2002 and 2021 over EHP. I would stick with one of those two clears if it was me. I have sprayed a ton of different PPG clears and those seem to work the best.
I used them for a while. They are finicky and therfore hard to get a consistant finish.
The Pros:
-you can get a real smooth deep glossy finish
-decent to polish
-low voc
-good coverage/build (compared to most medium solids clears, at least)The Cons:
-super finicky
-easy to run
-easy to get solvent pop
-can die back
-very slow to completely dry…usually too soft to handle after baking. Generally needed to be left overnight
-I’ve heard of nasty delamination issues if film build was not adequate (needs 2 good coats)The head painter I worked with managed to get fairly consistant finishes with it most of the time. He didn’t hate it, but I’m sure he prefers other brands of clear.
The best advice I can give is: over-reduce the clear by up to 10%. This will make it lay smooth like glass…but also increase the chances for runs and popping, so allow ample flash time. The accelerator can help with a few issues, but it does make the clear die off a hair and can contribute to the popping. The back to back coats seem to make the issues worse. You can spray them more like traditional clears with several minutes of flash time between coats, this was suggested by the tech rep. Kinda sucks since the back to back coats sound like a good time saver, but unless you like redos, the one visit concept is generally a load of cr@p.
Consistency is key, as soon as you change one thing just a little, it goes to sh!t. Its really too bad, since the rest of the system is really good and user friendly. If you are using low VOC products, PPG does have a much more user friendly clear. I think the it is DC4010, and according to the rep is good over solvent or water base.
Well I think I will stick to the traditional clears as you all have mentioned. I will be getting 1 gallon of the EC clear to demo and see how it is but I will most likly stick with the DC3000,DC4000,DCU2021
I have a crossflow setup and no bake so it has to be out of dust fairly quickly not to concerned with dry times as much. I have never used DCU2002 Is this something I should give a whirl?[quote=”Wydir” post=21675]Well I think I will stick to the traditional clears as you all have mentioned. Otherwise you are better off with the3000/4000 if you don’t have VOC limits
August 7, 2011 at 12:08 am #32135You narrowed down your best choice for your envvironment by saying you have a crossflow booth.I would use 2021 with dcx61 and then pick your reducers to match your job size.If you are doing a small job there is also a faster hardener but forget the #.Most of these clears work better with lots of airflow from a downdraft booth, but I did thousands of jobs with 2021 in a pressurized crossflow with great results. You might also check into the shopline euroclear, have heard great things about it.
August 7, 2011 at 11:24 pm #32158just stick witht he dc clears on the enviro. they work well. when i first switch to enviro i had a few hazeing problems and few pops, but that was the fact i loaded the clear on, now the only problem i may have is hazeing, and that comes from me not letting the base dry enough.
the only time i use 2002 is for all overs, and you have no bake so it could take a while to be cure enough to buff if needed. even with my bake, i still have to wait 24hrs before any buffing can be done. any sooner and the sand scratches just come back.
on the 2021 as you may now and jason pointed out just use the apporiate reducer for the job size and heat.
as for the dc’s it’s the same as u would do now. the only thing is your paint times will speed up once you get the hang of the base. the clear flash reguardless of what you use will be the same. Thanks alot fellas ,
No use in me making another wheel, Since you have all been there and done that. I did end up finding the post about the EC700 from a while ago. when Rayn said he didnt like Envirobase…. hahaI did just try out some Shopline Clear the JC661 Not bad I did put it on pretty thick looked great when I stopped sprayin but I came back 10 min later had a couple sags. sanded and buffed out great the next day.
Was about $150 for the clear and hardener it was a 4:1

Do you know why it is so cheap? As stated buy our PPG rep it offers very little UV protection, be carefull what you use it on.
