We did a demo of PPG Envirobase this past week and I thought I would give a little review. We have been using Cromax Pro for the last year.
PROS
-Goes on more like solvent base than Cromax.
-Covers very well. 2 coats then a control coat
-Very good color match
– multiple coats do not hurt final appearance. With Cromax once your 1.5 coats dry if you have to put more on it will die back.
-Dries pretty fast.CONS
-Harder to blend than Cromax. Golds and silvers wanted to halo.
-Overall application of basecoat is slower than Cromax.
-Mixing software isn’t as nice as DupontOverall I would like Envirobase better than Cromax except it was a pain in the ass to get blended. Cromax is simple. I use Spies clears and PPG doesn’t even come close to Spies clears. They dry slower, harder to apply, and the final appearance isn’t as nice. They are harder to buff also. I don’t think I would recommend this system with what I have seen so far. I might get stuck using it anyway but only time will tell. If I was to switch I think I would want it to be Autowave.
December 14, 2009 at 6:33 am #17827hmmmm thats what i keep hearing about the ppg waterbased is that it sux but ive heard the same about my systems waterbased  got some this summer an still havnt played with it yet vortex is what its called wonder if the name says it all  :lol1 :lol1 :lol1 i once knew a girl that could suck start a harly when i was younger to 😛 😛
December 14, 2009 at 7:14 am #17830I have heard that Sherwin is having delam issues with their waterborne. I either hear that Envirobase is the greatest thing since sliced bread or that it sucks. I don’t think it’s bad. I would spray it. I think Dupont has the edge on waterborne basecoat. I didn’t like their clear at all. I like their 2021 clear but you can’t use it with EHP.
If I was going on appearance I would pick Sikkens Autowave and Superior 250 clear. Off the gun I haven’t sprayed anything that looked better.December 14, 2009 at 7:19 am #17833thats good ta know ryan cant wait ta hit my rep with the delam ???s bet he will have ta chase his ass on that one 😉 :lol1 delams suc huh
December 14, 2009 at 8:55 am #17836I hit up my rep about the delam thing that I have herd about on here. He said that it will happen if you dont give enough flash time between base and clear. Its the guys that are pushing it too much. You cannot abuse the sherwin water like you can the solvent.Whats funny though is that he said out of all the paint mfgs out there, dupont was not too great.
December 14, 2009 at 3:55 pm #17844I can see where someone not trained on Dupont would think it was junk. It isn’t like any other manufactures waterborne. The application is totally different. I personally like it. It’s a very fast product. I have a few complaints but overall it works well.
December 14, 2009 at 4:51 pm #17847how do you compare it to glasurit or rm? also, i have only used waterborne once to airbrush with but for those of you that use it, how do you or can you wipe it down?? if something sits in base for a while before clearing can you wipe dry waterborn base down with w&g remover or something like that the way you can solvent base or is it too delicate? is there a special product for this?

Solvent should be fine. I have never used Onyx or 90-line so I can’t give any opinion on it.

As ryan says, a solvent based w&g remover is fine. If I need to nib any dirt out of the base I’ll use a foam back 1000 or 2000 grit pad dampened with solvent w&g to lubricate it.Once it’s fully dried it’s pretty much as durable as solvent base, you can sand it, tack it, tape it etc etc, just keep water away from it (just as you wouldn’t wipe ‘regular’ base down with a solvent reducer ;))
the thing i hate about waterborne even though i never used it yet is the shop temp has to be so high as to prevent freezing, which i guess means either keeping your heat on all night or heating the mixing room all night, and then the flash time of water is just ridiculous.

Freezing is 32 degrees F. honestly if you cant keep the shop above freezing at night something is wrong. cold temps can have an adverse effect on solvent based tints as well. and with the proper equipment flash time can be as fast or faster than solvents - AuthorPosts
