I purchased a gallon of Evercoat Rage ULTRA, there latest. Touting that it is the easiest sanding ,no pinholes ever..the cost was huge compared to Rage Gold (which I use regularly). It was a little heavier when spreading, but I must say it sanded awesome..just wondering if anyone else has experience with primer and paint over this filler?

X2 I have not used evercoat products for a long time and don’t plan too 😉For the price rage ultra and xtreme are both good products. They both run about same price for my shop some were in the mid thirtys per gallon. 3m is ok but I dont see a massive difference in performace vs cost. Which 3m is around forty eight dollars a for the same quanity. As far as gold, never liked it. As we all know pin holes are from couple reasons but nine times out of ten from the jerk who put (whipped) air bubbles in the product. If you like the ultra and its cost effective use it.Never had any issue from a Evercoat product in the last ten years or so. Dont use the red hardner. They(Evercoat) say its the same but only issues I have ever seen have been from that colored product. imho. Failures(with pink hardner) came when I use to live in Fl and the repaired panels would be in intensive sunlight and high temps. But then again those conditions make all but the best fail. Go Akzo 😉
October 24, 2012 at 4:15 pm #38760I tried the ultra. Seemed to sand pretty good…stayed tacky on the top surface though and was a heavier body. I really didn’t see an advantage over the 3m platinum which is what I’ve been using for a while now. The platinum costs me $32 a gallon and the Ultra was around $45 a gallon. Platinum it is for me…without even looking at the cost really.
Used the platinum plus a few times but I always went back to the Platinum. 3m did themselves a good service by buying Marson…except when it was under marson it was like $24 a gallon. lol.
October 25, 2012 at 4:18 am #38776It looks like my next gal of filler will be this 3M platinum, I’ve never tried it. I’m always lookin for something better..I’m still looking for the filler that sands and shapes itself..LOL
Try Quantum from Evercoat its expoy based….so straight to metal and over paint. And yes 3m says the same but not expoy based as far as I can tell. I checked with two suppliers today in my area no one buys any 3m bondo from them except me everyone they said uses Quantum. Ultra and xtreme are just reqular bondo.
October 25, 2012 at 5:54 am #38778The only thing epoxy based about quantum is the hardener, the filler is regular polyester filler with finer talc and resin. What I don’t like about evercoat fillers is they are super thick and harder to mix than other fillers, the old marson platinum is super creamy, easy to mix and spread and really doesn’t need a skim of flowable putty to finish it off.
October 25, 2012 at 9:08 pm #38790I use the 3M Platinum(01171), not the Plus. Smooth, sands easily, inexpensive.
October 26, 2012 at 1:55 am #38795Another vote for 3M Platinum. $38gl vs over $50 for any Rage product
