Hi Guys,
This is my first real post – so take it easy. I’ve got a bunch of questions, but they can take a back seat to a real problem that I’ve created for myself. I’m a home hobbyist not a pro – so type slow 😆 . Here’s the story. I’ve got an old Volvo (actually I’ve got 2) and I’ve got to get it painted sometime before winter hits. The front fenders are rusty and I managed to pick up three fenders through my Volvo network of pals.
I’m doing a complete colour change on this car (it’s nasty beater white at the moment) so I picked out the worst of the panels and used it to spray on the new colour as a test (see below)

Looks good, but it’s not like I spent any time prepping the panel, just roughed it up with a red 3M pad and gave it a full 3 coats until it was covered.
No problem yet…then I was prepping the panel that I was going to use and discovered that this panel had a lot of rust under the paint (it was a replacement and wasn’t seam sealed and the shipping primer was painted over) my sand blaster revealed how thin the metal was…I went through  .
So now I’ve got to use the other panel – it’s fine (the crease has been removed and the other dings knocked out) – but I’ve got a coat of pretty fresh paint on the panel. I need to sand it out and prep the rock chips and other messes that I left under the panel. What’s the easiest way to do this? I’ve tried to dry sand it with 220 grit and it loads the paper and doesn’t do much.
little messy but it works ;)
That saved me a ton of time…I didn’t want to disturb the factory finish and blasting it was out of the question. I’ve welded up the trim holes and got all the dents worked out today. I have some derusting to do tomorrow then a coat of epoxy primer and some 2K and block the fenders out.
Then it’s on to panel repair on the rear of the car this weekend.
