Some previous person attached rubbing strips to the sides of the Cadillac with a double sided tape. I have carefully removed the rubbing strip and I am left with a ton of tape and glue residue. Is there a quick and easy way to remove this? I am not so bothered about damaging the paint finish as the car is up for a complete respray anyway.

I have tried thinners/solvents, gasket scrapers, my best result is with a stanley knife blade used by hand and soaking the residue in thinners at the same time.

Once its down to a low enough level I guess I could use a toffee wheel on it but it seems way too thick and gloopy for that

I’ve spend like 90 minutes on the one rear quarter panel from starting to remove the rubbing strip to where I am now and it still has residue on it.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

    Try the eraser wheel.

I wouldn’t use a solvent, it tends to make it gloopy like you say. Normally I’ll shave the thick stuff off with a single edged razor blade, then go for the toffee wheel.

This will be your Best Friend there are a couple versions but this is the fastest way use with a cordless drill

    is that “Thankyou” button new?

I’ve found that keeping a blade very parallel has taken most of it off, also more care when removing the trim means more of the tape sticks to the trim and less on the panel. The 3M Stripe Off or Eraser wheel is what often is called a “toffee wheel” here. If I get the most of the tape off I can use one, it seemed too thick to use that initially.

Yeah Andy, the thinner wasn’t helping I guess.

i use the 3m eraser wheel on an air drill, it works well but a little messy.

since u dont care about the old finish, a floor scraper with a new blade works best. no chemicals, heat or eraser wheel needed

thanks again all. I managed, through careful use of a blade, not to leave so much residue on when pulling the rest of the trim which is proving easier to remove. I just have a light residue now which should come off easier.
