    Hi guys,

As per my intorduction I am trying to go self employed fully and see if I can’t make a living out of this car restoration and respraying scene. I’ve been painting for years in my garage and it just dosen’t fit the bill any more.

I have a few people asking me to respray thier entire cars, I have mine to do too ( project thread coming up ) but finding even a decent priced unit to start up with is proving nigh on impossible so, what about renting one?

Is it possible or allowed even? Does anyone on here have a booth free at weekends or evenings etc that they would consider loaning the use of?

All help and advice appreciated as always, ta very much 🙂

    Philly

Not much help mate, but here goes:

I’ve been looking into this myself as I do a lot of evening and weekend work, but can’t use the facilities at my workplace so I’m spraying in a mates workshop. It’s dirty, dusty and everything is covered in oil and grease, so not really ideal for spraying!! For bigger jobs I sheet up the floor which helps keep the dust down, but drying the paint is a different matter, especially water borne basecoat.

I’ve tried to find a booth to rent myself from time to time, but haven’t really had much luck. I’ve managed to do a one-off deal with a friend of a friend for an upcoming full respray, but nothing permanent. Would be great if there was some kind of network around, of people willing to rent out spare booth time, but then I’m sure most places would see it as doing their business out of money, as they could charge more for painting the job themselves.

Sorry I can’t be of much help, but if I can manage under the conditions below, then maybe your garage isn’t so bad!

    Thanks for the reply Andy!

Blimey I would be over the moon with a workspace like that!

How do you go about drying the paint and getting that place up to any kind of temperature? I struggle in my small garage come workshop never mind a space that big. I have lots of problems with orange peel in this colder weather.

I don’t have space to spray anything larger than say two bumpers at a time so any work I do is outside and exposed to the elements, not good for fresh paint either. I’ve been hunting high and low for a workshop, garage, booth etc that can be rented but everything is waay out of my price range. With no income except these odd jobs I get its difficult for me to afford anywhere for long enough.

I’m wondering about building some temporary booth around the car where it stands in the garden but all attempts have failed. Somewhere dry, warm and with space to work would be brill as it is starting to rust. I thought it worth asking if renting a booth is possible, I guess not unless you know someone then hey.

    Thanks Andy.

Basically I don’t 😆 I just heat the local areas using either a heat gun or an infra red lamp.

It’s been so cold in there this winter that one day my wet flatting bucket froze up! I put my paint products in his office area with a heater on to warm them up to a sprayable condition, but I’ve been having to wear woollen gloves while spraying as my guns get so cold. One day I brought a car in from outside covered in ice and snow. By the time I’d fitted a new front wing (fender), done some filler work on the damaged door and sill (rocker), and primed it all, the roof was still covered in snow

I did work at a shop once where we didn’t have the funds to buy a booth straight away, so built a temporary one out of studwork and fire proof plasterboard. A big fan at one end to extract the fumes, and a torpedo style propane heater were the only luxuries, and we turned out all kinds of jobs from that, right up to full repaints. Maybe you could find a small unit and construct something like that?

    Andy.

Ha, thanks for the offer, thats good to know 🙂

I think a network of places to rent out would be a good idea as previously sugggested.

One shop I used to work at, the boss would rent the booth out sometimes in the evenings.

Here in our city there are 2 shops that have mechanical areas and paint areas. All they do is rent out space on an hourly basis (yes, they have paint booths). Their cost is about $70/hr to rent. To me, that is a little high,,,especially when many shops only charge $70 and hour to paint…so it would almost make more sense to pay someone else to paint it for you… :rofl

If you are renting it, it won’t be cheap if it is heated as the gas to heat it costs a small fortune…and if you run a bake cycle, you better be ready to shell out some real money.

    Good luck
