Repairing and painting rolled over silverado

I just bought a 1999 Silverado that was rolled. The cab was smashed down a bit and so I got another cab to put on it. The new cab is a different color so will have to be painted. I have a few questions and would appreciate any insight.
1. Has anyone used the urethane bc/cc kits from tcpglobal.com’s restoration shop?
2. Should I strip the paint off completely or just take the clear off and scuff the paint up?
3. What paint would you recommend?

“paint that is still good can be sanded with 400 grit , just to give the new paint a tooth , for adhesion.” 🙂

hey CB, yes I have use the TC’s paint from the Restoration line. I like it.
As for the best paint, what ever you can afford. They can range as cheap as $300 for the kit to $1000! Just make sure that you get good clear and use a good gun, that will make your painting experience a lot better.

like stone said sand with 400 grit if its in decent shape, no need to take it down to metal if you dont need to. plus, how are you gonna go about switching the vin number from the old cab to the new?
I will change the vin tag and it shouldnt be a problem because it will match the vin on the frame. I think I am gonna go with tcp’s urethane bc/cc. If it dont hold up I will repaint in a couple years when the funds are better. I will post some pics when i get a chance.

In Illinois you cant legally move a vin tag, the state comes out and does it for a fee.
It’s the same here in Va. The DMV will send out an officer to inspect the vehicle. It’s not too big of a deal as long as you have your paper trail in order. You have to show reciepts for all the replacement parts used. They just want to make sure nothing is stolen and that the vehicle is safe for the road.
I’m assuming this truck is salvage and not clean title? In NY if they found out you switched the vin at the salvage inspection they would have a $hit fit. They call it vin tampering. I’ve done my fair share of cab swaps. In NY they give you a new vin. They call it an assigned vin. They remove the vin from the cowl and put a sticker in the door jamb with the new vin. I really wish they did it different so you could keep the original vin. Oh well, in NY you don’t have a choice. It’s either repair the original cab or get an assigned vin.

lol…yeah it makes for an interesting conversation with the credit union when you go to sell it. Last one I did the guys credit union called me and she says I need the vin for this truck. I said, I gave it to you, and read it off again. She says but it’s not 17 digits? lol, I was very suprised they were lending the money on it in the first place. 19k for rebuilt salvage and assigned vin, you would think they would want nothing to do with it.

As for the title it is clean and not branded. I’m not going to go through the hassle of going through the dmv’s process. I have all my receipts and everything in order. SHould I reprime the whole truck of just the areas that need some body work. I think there is only a couple dents in the bed that need fixed. I will get some pictures tomorrow. Thanks for every ones help.
