I’ve watched some of the video’s but im lacking all the equipment and tools.
I’ve a few patches of rust along my cill. I’ve ouched 1 up and hopefully the others are like it, no holes.
Looking for some guidelines on how to do it decent enough.
What I did the 1st time was mask of the area around the rust, sand away all the rust with 80grit, sanded again with 120, sprayed on some etch primer, light sand with 1200, primer and light sand with 1200, coat of paint and light sand 3x and finally 2x clear coat with a lights sand in between. The result was a square patch of paint that with a line around it 😀
Are there easy ways to blend it in a little bit, what part of above did it go wrong?
It’s not a major problem that there’s a line at the cills because they will be covered over in part by the side skirt. But I also have a patch at my filler cap that I’d like touched up – maybe this ones better done by the pros?
AnonymousAugust 4, 2009 at 11:25 pm #15171You will always want to prep and apply a clear coat to the entire panel you are working on. If your sanding your clear in between coats it leads me to believe your using aerosol clears which is a big no-no. I presume aerosol primers to which are not going to protect your work as well & the clear won’t look very good either. I’m having trouble picturing exactly what you have going on, maybe a pic would help.
Here is what you need to do in a nutshell:
1. grind way rust & sandblast if necessary
2. weld if theres a hole
3. apply epoxy primer (optional) then once dry apply a body filler.
4. prep & prime the filler and feathering
5. sand your primer (block first)
6. apply base & blend it across your panel
7. apply clear (entire panel)I forgot about this or didnt get the email notification.
After watching the video’s and tutorials I can see I didn’t go at it the right way.
As the parts are all going to be covered up by the side skirts I’m not to concerened about how it looks. I’d like to do a full respray so if it last till then thats good enough.
Your right in thinking I used tins.
If I started treating all the rust I’d end up re-painting all the doors, the boot lid is starting to go, rear quarter has a dirty patch on it, there’s sratches on the roof. I’m making this car sound bad i think  She’s been sitting up parked for 7 months now in typical irish weather and uncovered, quite certain most of the rust wasn’t there when I got the car.
