I think I have the peel down pretty good now with the Sagola. Matches up just right on the GM anyway. Took Jaysons advice and dropped it down to 25 psi and it worked well.

looking good. is the sagola really worth the time playing with it to get the texture just right versus a sata with automatic texture settings? :silly:

    :rofl
But to be honest, thats what I used to do with my Sata 3000 HVLP gun. It sprays just the right texture for this stuff. Its funny timing actually. I got the Sagolas to make my restos as smooth as possible, and at the same time took a job doing collision work. I will still spray maybe 6-10 restos a year, so its all good.
I did use a medium speed clear today and it seems to match the peel better than the ultra fast dry stuff. Maybe the quick dry is thinner and sprays flatter…I dont really know. This is all pretty new to me.

Damn it! I tried to spray the last 2 bumper covers ultra flat. One today and one yesterday. Got a run in each of them. Wondering if I should have gone with the 1.3 tip (needle and nozzel is $140) to have gained a little control. Both were the covers with multiple fog light type holes and lots of curves and bulges. Both were done in ultra fast DC3000 PPG clear with the 1.4 at about 31 psi full fan and material at about 4″ and 75% overlap. Was a little cool at 63 degrees in the booth today.
I did a hood as well or i would have tried the mini on it.
How important is it to spray the whole thing in full passes. Meaning not stopping in the middle or whatever. I am a fairly short guy and the reach all the way around the cover is pretty scetchy for me.
They turned out real nice besides the runs, but not as good as some of the pics shown here (which was what I was trying to get). The horizontal parts were dead flat, but the sides had a small amount of texture. I want to be able to lay it all perfectly flat.
Also I may call tomorrow and see if I can demo a 3000 rp with a 1.3.

my preference was for the 1.2 RP however theres nothing stopping the fluid being restricted down for finer results from any gun realy

Yeah I suppose it all depends on how you like to spray. Did a Nissan 370z today and it went better with about one turn in on the fluid. But I’d like to get my hands on the guy that decided the front bumper cover should have some flat color as well. That was a pain to mask off!!

Paul was that intended to be a primer gun for you?

    February 23, 2013 at 8:04 pm #41595

no i had no intentions for it other than to make few quid selling it on ,i suppose it would make an excelent primer surfacer gun though but from what i gather it is actualy a refinishing gun probably very usefull for larger vehicles or just choke it back a bit as the aircaps arent matched to tip size like some other models

Oh i got ya. Just an odd size for doing much else besides primer. Perfectly good finish gun im sure, but would be better suited with a smaller tip size for that.

    February 24, 2013 at 4:29 am #41608

Has anyone tried out the Optima thrifity, not convinced on the atomisation with the 1.3 i .
I feel it puts on a lot of clear if that’s what you what, but lacks that fine droplet size needed for uhs. Looks and feels the part though, maybe some more tweaking will find that sweet spot.

i have a 1.4 900i and my friend dropped his 1.3 RP in favour of a 1.4 900i i sold him ,although these seem to lay heavily the clear then “magicly” lays down flatter than most any gun i have used, i must admit i do dial mine in though but i know my mate uses his wide open

personaly i would have chosen a smaller tip size ,even with a Sata RP or my old Walcom FXHA i prefered a 1.2 but when they came up BNIB on ebay at £50 a piece i wasnt going to get tooo fussy about tip sizes 😉

im very happy with my 900i but i would love to get my hands on a thrifity cos it looks ,realy cool and im sucker for looks hehehe plus my experiance with Befrag guns has been overall a very posative one ,pots are worse than Sata though lids fail faster and the actual pots turn on the metal fittings which scraps the actual pot as they then leak
