I know this may be an over asked question, or going on argument about which gun is best. But I mean how good is SATA? More importantly the 4000, its been on running thru my head that maybe I want to save up and get a 4000 RP. I like having the best equipment. I have two Tekna’s and love them. I know that the gun doesn’t make the painter but people swear by SATA and some people swear by others. My instructor swears by Devilbiss, as he bought a SATA NR 2000, didn’t like it so he used it as his primer gun. I just want different points of views from painters who have gone thru many guns. Thanks.

I also ask this because Autobody Tool mart has the SATA RP for close to $700, where the non digital 4000 is around $609

the Sata 4000 hasnt been as well received by die hard sata fans. Honestly, stick with the tekna’s for now if you are happy with them. you are still in school. no point in having $1500 worth of guns at this stage of the game. Dont buy guns from ABTM either. you will be able to get a better price through your local jobber(likely the one your school deals with)

It really depends where you ask,one place will tell you to get a plus gun :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
Seriously though I am a sata guy due to the fact I can use it up to 10 times a day and take it apart after each use and it will perform flawlessly.Satas are tough as hell and can take a beating, try doing that with a plus. The few people that bitch about sata are the cheap pricks who don’t want to buck up to get a good gun.It doesn’t matter what you buy the top shelf guns are very close in price now.I have used Devilbiss, sharpe, ecco, optima, sata and prefer satas for clear, nothing better than an RP.Just my 2 cents 😉 Ding gave good advice when you start at a shop and all you are going to do is paint then get a sata, for now the teknas are a great gun,I have 2 of them that I use for waterborne. My favorite out the rp’s is the first gen,the 4000 is a little slow, the 3000 is the fastest.

I understand that, every one has a preference. Personally I just like having the best out there, I know I won’t need it right now, maybe in a few months, ill put $20 bucks a week away and invest in on or the 3000. But I’m in no rush into getting one. And I agree, I’m not big on the hvlp, I like compliant. I’m just getting all my things slowly, I’m getting asked to work on peoples cars already and I’m still in school :cheer: but if all goes well ill have enough money to have a couple different guns 👿

And yeah I wasn’t considering buying from Autobody tool mart, their prices are outrageous. And the 4000 on there website is actually $645 now :wak

You are absolutely right about opinions…

I also agree with Ding. The Tekna is a great gun for base. I don’t think it is the best gun for clear, but as far as finish goes, you can most definitely get a good finish with it. If I were you I would stick with that for now. Clearing a job here or there with the Tekna is perfectly fine, but not the clear gun I would choose to use daily.

I personally like the SATA 4000 RP for clear, I like it better than the 3000. Jayson likes the earlier RP better, and it is a nice gun. But for me, the 4000 is what I am most comfortable with. I wouldn’t think of the first Gen RP as old and the 4000 as the newest and greatest…rather think of them as different variations of the same gun just modified for different preferences, just like clothing…one size of pants will fit you better than another.

Ok thanks guys, I was just seeing the different views on the gun, I won’t be getting the 4000 anytime soon believe me haha , but later maybe I will, or maybe ill stick to my Tekna’s and be a die hard Devilbiss fan  , I’ve kind of wanted to also try Iwata. But like I said I won’t be getting a new gun anytime soon, just looking for different opinions on different guns .but I get what your saying Ben, the RP on Autobody toolmart stills goes for the same price as the 4000

Thats good. Probably the best thing you can do in the mean time is try to get ahold of some of these guns (like the SATA and Iwata) and see if you can demo them. If you have sales reps for them, or sales reps from your local paint jobbers they may be able to lend you one to try. You could also talk to your instructor and see if he is willing to help you find some to demo.

    I like SATA.

There we are, I’ve come out of the closet and said it 😛 😆

I haven’t demo’d the 4000 yet, but I used a 2000hvlp for years as a base gun, and I’ve used both of the 3000’s. I found the 3000 RP to be a great gun, but very fast, even for me. I would like to get a demo of the 4000 RP as I’ve heard good things about it, but I still have my life long issue with SATA – that silly fan control on the side. What purpose it serves I don’t know, as once my fan is set I leave it be. And if you did want to use it to quickly narrow the fan down you’d still have to wind the material knob and air down to suit, so what’s the point?

I know I’m in the minority, but being a leftie as soon as I pick up any SATA I immediately catch the fan control with my index finger and turn it down to spot. Not ideal!

Anyway, after my meaningless rant  it’s really hard to say which gun is “The Best” as a gun that suits one person may not suit the next perfectly. Some may say a Ferrari is the best car on the road, but they don’t make one that I can throw my compressor into the back of, so they’re no good to me 😉

That’s just crazy talk :silly: 😆

can the sata 4000 have the fan control on either side of the gun? Or have I just dreamt that up

    February 29, 2012 at 3:51 am #36058

Ok, thanks for the different opinions guys, I will talk to my instructor tomorrow and see if he can do anything. Hopefully he can. Of not ill just wait a few months and see what I can do. But yeah, everyone sprays different, my instructor has also said that, I’m a faster painter than him, he’s a more slower heavier painter. I’ve been getting asked to work on several different cars cars so I should be able to have enough for a new toy haha but for now my Tekna’s are my top guns

    February 29, 2012 at 6:41 am #36061

I bought two 4000 RP’s for my shop. Both of my painters came in with their own paint guns that they preferred. After trying the Sata’s I bought both of them use them exclusively. I am not a painter myself, but I really like the Sata guns.

I think your dreaming about the 4000 But my minijet 4 has the fan control on both sides so we can all screw up stuff no matter if we are right handed or left. 🙂

Looked at our minijet today at work its two sided fan control, I thought i got that idea from somewhere. I dont like minijets (sounds like you dont either) thats why its sat on the shelf collecting dust.
