Is Limco 4100 the fast clear

    June 8, 2015 at 2:55 am #48731

I answered you strait from mail sorry if a duplicate. Limco 4100 is a slow drying clear for large areas but I’ve never had a problem with solvent pop even hosing it and I don’t think I put that heavy a coat on her but I’ve never been scared to pump it on

Yeah and it was prob just me rushing the 1st coat the excitement of a new rp and all.

I have been an RP user for 15 years and tried them all.I love the 5000rp and have been using it since late last year.I find the speed is very comparable between the first gen,3000 and 5000.If you feel you are getting too much film build you can try decreasing your distance and moving faster with a tighter overlap, increasing pressure is also a possibility along with using a slower mix.A thick coat of a fast mix/speed clear will skin over causing solvent pop.HTH

Thanks for weighing in Jason, I too paint fast and close. The clear I used was an all over clear with normal hardener and slow reducer. i will bump the air pressure up a few pounds over 2 bar and give my 1st coat a little longer to flash. I just wanted to see what it would do at 29 psi for the 1st run. It had to be the extreme temp in my booth coupled with too fast recoat time. I do love this gun and will dial my technique into it im sure. Ive never been accused of conserving paint thats for sure-but i dont cut and buff much either. Its just this didnt seem like too much film build it dried flat and deep but was covered with real small solvent pop but not much die back. I dont usually paint when the temp is approaching 90 but I must confess a new gun gets me excited.

I forgot to mention that I find the 5000 needs more air pressure,I run mine (1.4 wide open fan/fluid) at 32-34psi but would use 30psi for the first gen rp.I have also found even at that high of a pressure it still uses a little bit less material.Experiment a bit and see what you like,Im glad you like it so far.

Always good advice jayson good to hear from you again and yes the 5000 is a gem

Jason-that makes a lot of sense-the finish im getting is gorgeous but it has that feel of when you cut back your pressure just a pound or 2 and dump the clear on a horizontal like a hood or deck lid for no peel. I felt like the gun was already a lil too shy on pressure but the literature says 29 max for compliance so that is what i was trying first. Plus i live in the Carolinas but am a transplant from Buffalo. ..I never even new what solvent pop was till I mooved to the Charlotte NC area. I too have been in the industry for a long time but not as a production painter like yall -a combo guy. I will try 34 as that is what guys around here are saying the gun loves also. Its just hard to get much opinion about this gun as the price and the flaws of the 4000 are putting people off I think. My jobber has not sold 1 5000 as of last week and hes a big sikkens dealer. People have gone to Iwata big time since the 4000was not the success of the older Sata stuff-shame cus Sata is the best gun by far…unless you like camping out in the booth all day that is. Peace

Thanks for the reply Rickybobby. I use a pair of teknas for base 1.3 and 1.4 and would not trade them for any other base guns. Idont usually use an rp for base but do have them all. I find the 5000 rp even in 1.3 to be a really fast gun and i have and still use a jet 90sl 1.4. and a 3000 rp 1.3 I never had any of the sata hvlp since the nr95 left me wanting so may years ago but i did bite on a 4000 hvlp last year and it i feel is ok. The clear finishes im getting off the 5000 rp are gorgeous slick but a little thick and as Jason pointed out the gun needs more pressure than 2bar. I will be playing with presure this week to see if i can keep my style and still solve my solvent pop issues.

I forgot to ask what base and clears are you using at those pressures?

    June 9, 2015 at 4:44 pm #48757

what do you use pressure wise for HS clears specifically-i use diamont base and various clears from limco, diamont and metalux. I must confess sherwin is a brand i got zero experience with. I found 29 psi to be adequate for the limco 4100 clear i use for cheapside stuff but thats where im running into solvent pop issues with this gun. Is the clear you are using at 24-26 psi medium solids?

    June 9, 2015 at 9:17 pm #48759

Hey 2dig what caps are you useing on the tekna and what kind of gun set up?

    June 9, 2015 at 9:27 pm #48760

Thanks Jason-A little more pressure did the trick- no pop on anything i sprayed today and still a sick slick finish-love this gun. i found 34 just a little too much and backed her off to 32 and the gun sprayed itself. 30 on the horizontals and 32 on the verticals and im really very happy with the result.

I know this seems unorthodox but i called Mike at devilbiss and he said its cool-i have a copper with 1.3/1.4 that i use the HV30 hvlp cap from the prolite line up for mettalic fine-i use it full fan/material at 18-20 lbs. The prolite I have the te20 1.3/1.4 for all other base. It is good full fan and material also but 20-24 lbs depending on humidity. Being in the south it gets nasty muggy and changes daily. I do use the 4000 hvlp 1.3 also for solid base and some clear.

Always full open both-I never choke any gun-half trigger maybe sometimes but always full open settings. I just change my speed. I get in trouble everytime i choke a gun. This bad boy really just needed more air. Its astonishing still how much difference 2-3 lbs can make with these rps.
