At school we have only used Sata. We have tons of other guns but my teacher loves Sata. We use the Minijet for small surfaces, blends and such. We use the HVLP KLC primer gun, and the digital HVLP 3000 for base/clear purposes.

Now that I have about 3 friends wanting me to paint their cars, and no paint gun, ive been really looking at Iwatas. From how smooth people say they spray, and how they can use them with primer as well, I would like to know what to look for. I don’t have the funs to buy one for strictly primer, and another for base/clear.

So whats the difference in all of them? LPH? LVX? LVB? and the orange cap? I was looking on Ebay and was seeing them all go for about 500 shipped. Thats cheaper Than Sata. I saw on ebay of a guy selling a great condition LPH400 with cup and the bid right now is only 175. Should I try for it?

also if I have the 1.3 tip could I still spray primer through it? or would I need to buy a bigger tip? thanks for any responses guys.

The LPH400 is what you want for an all around gun, I’d probably go with the 1.4…it should still squeeze primer out, depends on the primer too…they all suggest a different tips size, you won’t be shooting any polyester primers with it I don’t think but regular 2k urethanes should work no problem.

The LPH comes with the silver all around tip. The LVX is designed for metallic basecoat and the LVB is a low-pressure tip designed for high pearl colors. $175 is a steal for the gun if you can get it. Just keep in mind replacement tips are usually another $175 so make sure you get the size your after.

Hey thanks alot Jimmo. the gun does have the 1.3 tip on it but I plan on getting various tips. and I’m watching it on ebay. It looks to be pretty clean kept. The only primer that I have shot is epoxy primer ( uncertain of which kind ) and DPS3055 for a filler. Its what we use in class. I really like the way it sprayed and it was easy so ill be using that again probably. For clear the only clear I have shot is PPG Delta DCB100 and I like that as well. Of course I’m not experienced yet.

I was thinking with the used gun on Ebay what I get it and its all dirty on the inside or the fluid needle is messed up on it. I sent the guy an email but havn’t heard anything back. Theres a brand new one in box on there with the 1.4 needle and the silver, purple, and orange cap for 575 shipped. is that still a good price for the gun and the three tips?? if it is ill go ahead and buy it now.

Thts a good price for that gun with all three caps. Each cap will cost you around $100.00. The 1.4 works better than the 1.3. Buying a new gun is a better option than a cheep used one. You may end up putting so much money into it getting it back it shape you could have just got a new one.

So can I still shoot primer through the 1.4 tip? If so would I need to reduce it more or is there a certain type of primer I would need to use for it?

That iwata with the purple tip kicks ass for base coat… keep in mind Im spaying waterbase

You will be fine with that gun for as much as it sounds like you will be spraying with it…water is thick and I have evean sprayed clear with mine….the new low voc clear is also super thick..

it will spray some primer if you have to. with a 1.4 and primer it will go slow and most will have to be overreduced to get it through the gun but it will work. the spi epoxy i use sprays best though a 1.4 but none of the urethanes. those i use a 1.9. the iwata is a great gun. i have 3 lph400’s. you will find them to be different than a sata in the way they feel and spray. sata’s are definatley built more solid and have a better feel but the iwata doesn’t blow as hard. it has a softer fan which allows me to put clear on so it flows out a little nicer. i like the 400 for clear hands down over either sata 3000. for base the 400 is ok and what i use but the sata is probably a little better in that neighborhood.

I have the LPH400 gun with silver and orange caps.

Silver cap: Awesome for clear, not so good for metallic basecoats.

Orange cap: Decent for mettalics, but once I used Sata HVLP, Sata is definitely better for basecoat.
You can definitely spray nice and even metallics with orange cap (18 psi), but its much easier with Sata. I sprayed BMW 309 arctic silver first time with orange cap and it came out great.

I love this gun, the only thing I dislike about it is the spreed. Even after bumping the pressure to 25psi its still slow with lots of overspray (you defeat the HVLP purpose by increasing pressure).
I use the Sata RP for large panels like a hood or doors, but I’d use the Iwata for smaller panels like a bumper. The W400 is better suited for faster speed.

Here is a picture of a bumper I did long time ago, after practicing on 2 test panels with Iwata to get the hang of it. Straight out of the gun, no wet-sanding/buffing. Great all-around gun for someone who likes to spray soft and slow.

Jim c-How much will the primer have to be over reduced? i like to spray my primer pretty thick so I wouldn’t want it to run all the time. I guess thats speed control for ya! Is there a seperate cheaper gun I could look at for the primer? maybe a sharpe or binks or something just for primer? And for the base coat how different is it compared to a sata 3000? Ive been watching some vids and it looks like the Iwata spreads real nice and even for base.

Zarbat- I was going to use the orange cap for my base and use the silver cap for clear. Ive heard the silver cap is pretty awesome for clear. None of the colors ill be shooting are a metallic so ill be fine in that neighborhood.

whats the difference between the W400 and the LPH series? When I paint in class using the sata 3000 i spray at 29psi and its an HVLP. Thats what it says to spray at.

By the way that paint looks great! looks like no orange peel at all! good job!

You can spray almost any epoxy primer with your Iwata. Epoxy primers ame the same viscosity as basecoat and they can be spayed with 1.4.
But a filler primer (2K primer) will need a 1.8 tip. Buy a cheap gun for primer. I’d never shoot primer in my Iwata.
I used Astro 4014 for epoxy and a cheap devilbiss for 2k primer.

W-400 is like Sata RP. Better gun for clear, faster and atomizes better.

LPH-400 is like Sata HVLP, less overspray, better for basecoat but has no problems shooting clear like glass if you increase the pressure. You really can’t go wrong with it.
