Shooting a 2:1 clearcoat (2:1 as in 2 parts of clear, 1 part hardener) over a different brand of clearcoat (4:1 ratio) wet on wet, will this give problems?
I’m doing a small candy job soon and the candy will be delivered (i think) as a candy concentrate mixed through a 4:1 clearcoat from a brand i do not know, different than the clear i normally use (=2:1) and planning to finish with…
AnonymousJune 30, 2012 at 5:59 am #37533Do you have any other info on the product? I’m not big on custom but I would assume it would be more like an intercoat, I can’t imagine having to apply a candy in a thicker clearcoat. Perhaps someone more familiar with this stuff will chime in.
@Jimmo, the candy is no intercoat as there is a hardener with it (4:1).
The product is from motorradläcke (German motorcyclepaint supplier).I only have their candy product, not their clearcoat, and i wonder if it is safe to finish the job with my own brand of clear (Acme 2:1).
AnonymousJune 30, 2012 at 5:13 pm #37539An intercoat could have a hardener, It makes me think of the BASF BC00 which is labeled as a clear but its characteristics/chemistry is more similar to a basecoat and clearing is no problem. However if this were a regular 2K clear the way I understand it is if they use the same type of hardener you can, but crossing brands I doubt you’d be able to tell. I really don’t know enough about the chemistry to say this confidently, I would think it to be best letting the first clear dry and scuff it with a grey pad then shoot the next one.
June 30, 2012 at 5:52 pm #37540have them send you some of the clear that they are mixing the candy with. that way you can put a coat or 2 over the candy to protect it and it’s compatible. then you can scuff the clear and reclear with your stuff and not have to worry about having it all blow up on you. Or just have them send you the candy toner and you can mix it in your own clear
