Hey guys
I was wondering what brand paint system should I use to get a show car quality refinish? Cost of materials is not an issue.I only want to do it once.Any input would be greatly appreciated.March 5, 2011 at 5:54 am #29119i would use whatever is avail to me and whatever i am comfortable using.
March 5, 2011 at 9:14 am #29132I will be doing it myself.I have painted alot of vehicles. But that has been over 15 yrs ago.I use to be stuck on PPG and turned out some nice paint jobs at the time.
I do not make my living painting cars.Just a hobby now.I don’t know that much about todays systems. The Dupont jobber is an old friend and he is pushing me towards Dupont. He did suggest Spies 5400 primer for the Corvette I am doing and I really like it.He said that any Dupont system would go over the Spies primer.Anyway,I started thinking about it and found this site and thought I would ask and get others ideas.AnonymousMarch 5, 2011 at 9:26 am #29133I think you’ll be able to turn out a showcar finish with almost any paint line, I think whats more important is the methods to get perfectly straight panels and the clearing/sanding/reclearing & polishing to do to get that nice no texture finish though. Personally I like BASF mostly because I’m familiar with it, I’m sure either PPG, Dupont/Spies will work just fine too. What color are you doing?
March 5, 2011 at 4:51 pm #29139Between dupont and spies I would choose Spies. I have never sprayed it But talking with those that have It is a really nice product. Ryan knows a lot about spies. Maybe he can chime in
March 5, 2011 at 5:46 pm #29142Between Dupont and Spies Hecker there is no way I would use anything dupont. Spies makes a very nice product, a little different to use but nice. they don’t have an epoxy if you were wanting to use one but everything else would be fine. Depending on your gun setup i would use 8035 clear.
There clears seem to do better with smaller fluid tips. I had the best results with a Sata RP 1.2 and the Iwata W-400 1.3.
For basecoat it will cover was faster than Dupont, and shouldn’t cost much more.
What color are you spraying, what guns do you have, what kind of setup do you have to paint in? All these things make a difference, give us a little feedback and we can try and help more.
March 5, 2011 at 7:42 pm #29143I would use PPg Global line starting with the DP epoxy primers , D839 surfacer ,D839 wet on wet sealer and BC with D894 with 887 hardener should get a beautiful and durable finish
March 5, 2011 at 8:41 pm #29147I am spraying a 65 Corvette the original goldwood yellow.Dupont was the original supplier to GM for the Corvette plant in 65.I want to be sure the color is accurate. This is a solid color so I know that makes is easier to get the color correct. We had a real hard time trying to get the color right on a 67 Vette that was a met green with PPG.I have a SATA NR2000 gun.As far as a booth,it is nothing spectacular.
