Just a quick auto clean question. I have been told not to use it to wipe down panels before painting because it can cause fisheyes and adhesion problems? Anyone have any input for me?
June 21, 2012 at 7:17 am #37364I use it everyday without issue. If you were to not dry the autoclean off the panel completely and left some residue there could be an issue.
Do you use the standard Autoclean or the 1.28?

What do you use for a waterborne cleaner?

For plastic parts I am now mostly using Isopropyl and we also have the Antistatic surface cleaner. For waterbourne cleaner, the best thing (after trying many products) has been aerosol glass cleaner. The Sikkens rep agreed that glass cleaner seems to do a better job than anything they sell.
June 21, 2012 at 7:36 am #37379It’s the 1.28. I have been using it for over a year now and have never had a problem with it. The other painter I work with refuses to use it and thinks I’m pushing my luck with it. I like the stuff! I always follow up with M600 though.

If you can get the autoclean 1.28 up there use it. I like it more than glass cleaner.
Underpaid,
I would be curious to know why the other painter thinks that. It is completely fine to use as a final wipe. I prefer it for that purpose compared to the standard Autoclean.
What does the other painter use in place of it?
June 21, 2012 at 8:01 am #37381He uses M600 for most everything. Once in a while he will use anti stat for things??? I’m not sure why he doesnt like it. Before I came to work there I guess they had a lot of issues with things. I personally have not had any issues.
The only problem I have ever had was a clear delam. It was a red in abp with lesonal pro air over it. It was peeling in sheets, clear came a way from the base. Sent a sample in and sikkens said it was from baking it? They paid us to redo it.

Proper towels make all the difference with Autoclean. Fisheyes are from inadequate removal of it. Usually a telltale of this is white wipe marks on the about to be painted object.
Mixing it with distilled water or Autowave activator can also help minimize this issue. I’ve ben using Autoclean only for years now with zero issues.
June 21, 2012 at 3:28 pm #37384I agree with Baron. If you leave residue it can fisheye, but you can see the residue after it’s wiped.
I would have a hard time painting something without using Autoclean.
I don’t know how many of you are familiar with DeVilbiss De-Wipes (or Maxx-Off wipes), but I have been using them for almost 10 years now and LOVE them! They are pre-saturated (isopropyl alcohol/de-ionized water) wiping clothes. I will wipe a car down with M600 (or any other systems solvent cleaner) first, then follow that step by wiping everything again with the De-Wipes. The De-Wipes are a one step product, and you do not have to follow it with a dry towel to wipe off as you do with wax and grease removers. Nice little security step to ensure that you get ANY leftover residue off your panels, plus, they can squeeze into all the little nooks and crannies you might otherwise have difficulty cleaning properly. Very quick to use, ANTI-STATIC, great for waterborne top-coating, COMPLETELY removes all the smudges/fingerprints from whites/white pearls :rock , and fantastic as a final primary cleaner for raw plastic parts… I honestly don’t know how I ever functioned without them back in the day! :wak :cheers
