For all you sikkens guys, I know most of you are spraying superior250 but just wanted to get some input on the HS+
February 10, 2011 at 9:54 am #28292I have sprayed gallons and gallons of it,what do you want to know??Nice gloss can be tricky to spray,it likes lots of air pressure,it can run ,so make sure your first coat is dry to the touch. It is slower than ACIII and I wouldn’t use it in an unheated booth with poor air flow, use in a heated downdraft only.Good clear for completes, has a very nice look to it.Use the rapid autocryl hardener and rapid, med, or slow activator. Can be a little slow for crash painting, all depends how you use it.Narrow down your questions and I will answer them :stoned
February 10, 2011 at 4:51 pm #28295Agree with Jayson. It would not be my first choice in an unheated booth. I was never a huge fan of HS+. It can be a finicky clear.
If I was in your situation I would rather use Lesonal Glamour with accelerator if you needed something for a bigger job. I think it lays out better and doesn’t run as easy. Just my 2 cents though.
February 10, 2011 at 5:47 pm #28297I have only been spraying the autoclear HS+LV for only 2 months so I have more questions than opinions, but I do agree that it is finicky and does like to run.
I was told to spray it with my rp with 1.4, but it seemed to run way to easy and shrink up the next day so I changed back to the 1.3 and it seems to be better. Jayson, what air pressure and or gun set up would you recommend
ThanksFebruary 10, 2011 at 6:41 pm #28298HS+LV is not anything like HS+. I have not heard anything good about the LV myself
February 10, 2011 at 7:10 pm #28301Sorry, new to the Sikkens line and not up to speed on all the products
February 11, 2011 at 12:33 am #28312
I heard if you mix it 3:1:1.5 it works nice
What clear are you talking about??With sikken clears you do not want to add more activator to the clear, there is no clear Iknow that mixes 3:1:1.5
I also agree with Ryan HS+ LV is crap, that’s why they came out with energy pro 250.I tried HS+ LV it at the training center and it’s just not a very good product, not even in the same league as HS+.
I don’t know maybe you have it fixed now,but you really should get your booth working with some heat, changing the clears is not the answer, there is a learning curve with each one and they all have their quirks.February 11, 2011 at 5:17 am #28324Ok guys, heres the deal. As of right now Im spraying in a non heated semi down draft autobody toolmart booth. We are using Pro Air. On the bigger jobs it hard to get around a vehicle without getting a dry line. On smaller jobs it seems to work well other that it dies back a few days later? It could be a C.A.S. problem, Im not sure. I am using an LPH400 1.4. Its a little slow but its all I have other than my CVI and a 3000hvlp. In a few moths we will be putting a heat and bake mode make up on it. I have the choice of using ACIII, HS+, and the Pro Air. Just wanted to get some input on whats best. We are on ABP so sup.250 wont work, unless its the new stuff thats being tested.
February 11, 2011 at 5:36 am #28325See if they can get Lesonal Glamour or Autoclear PC. The PC should be out now or getting ready to come out. I have heard good things about it.
February 11, 2011 at 6:05 am #28328Jay. The tech rep that was here said if you mix hs+lv 3:1:1.5 it works much better. This was after i told him i heard it sucked 😉
and he looked at me funny when i mentioned mixing superior 250 hardener in energy pro. said the iso’s are a lot Hotter in superior hardener
I do know a painter at a toyota dealer that uses autoclear III in a crossdraft booth with no heat that seems to have pretty good resultsFebruary 11, 2011 at 6:58 am #28350Well dinger I got the superior hardener in the energy pro info from the head instructor from the western canada training center. So your rep is out of the loop,so to speak. As far as the hs+lv you could be right, but with sikkens clears the actvator is more than a reducer,it is like a reactive reducer,so there will be more chances of dieback and runs if it is increased, personally I wouldn’t even use that clear let alone play junior chemist.
I also don’t buy what he told you about the superior hardener, the energy pro hardener is fast as hell, and doesn’t stay open very long, superior makes it more sprayable.
Just my 2 cents :kofeeUnderpaid…if you are looking for a quick clear for crash painting check out lesonal universal clear, and for bigger jobs and completes lesonal glamor is nice,HS+ is going to be in the neighborhood of $100 a sprayable quart,so it all depends what you want, but heat will make all the difference.I have never had proair die off so either your base is still wet or something is up,akzo products need heat.

Thanks Ryan, next time I see a rep I will ask about the Autoclear PC. As for the lesonal glamor…is it a fast clear, does it need to be baked? Speed is not a real big deal with me but the other painter wants everything to be dry yesterday! I would like the glamour if it looks good, holds a gloss and can be baked for 30-40 min and be taken out of the booth.February 11, 2011 at 7:23 am #28355What your looking for is exactly what glamour is. The PC might be more versatile, I don’t know. I will never get to use it as it doesn’t go over water
