I notice there’s a few on here,I been spraying autowave, and superior 250 for the past 3 years at the dealership I work for, just wondering how your paint reps treat you on personal projects?
I used to spray PPG,and on my own cars, that’d be shown, etc.,I could get super deals on product, even free gallon of clear here and there etc.,I can’t seem to get my current reps to kick in anything, and I don’t feel like paying $1200 for a gallon kit of clear.:wak
When I go to a show,or cruise night, people always ask what I spayed it with, and don’t really want to be saying”I sprayed it with PPG,or SPI because they treat me better, and product is half or a third the cost”.
I am aware that it is some of the best clear(250)out there(that I have sprayed anyway),it sprays alot like the 2002 I used to use,but that was only in the $380 a kit range.
Anyone know of a way to get these guys to be a little less stingey in this area?
I’m not looking for freebies, just a better deal than joe shmuck off the street.

Why dont you buy it through the shop and get their discount? I dont expect anything for free or discounted even on my own jobs.. We buy anywhere from 10-35k a month in product so we get our fair share of discounted items, but seeing as you might only paint 1-2 of your own cars a year you shouldnt expect the same treatment as the shop.

Well don’t wait for Barry from SPI to give you anything for free either :rofl :rofl :rofl My jobber is great,he gave me 2 gallons of superior and hardener etc and 3 litres of autowave for my chevelle no charge :clappy But the base went bad before I got around to painting it 😛 Our shop is pretty good,we don’t have to pay squat for doing our own cars, unless you are doing a write off every week.Talk to your jobber or rep and tell him it is a show car and it will get attention and they will get some advertising. If they still won’t help you tell em you will use ppg and you are thinking of switching :clappy that might help loosen there belt :lol1

I said I didn’t expect free, but to me,going to a show is free advertising for them,I know the PPG guys seen it that way,I still get a better deal from them, and I don’t even buy regularly there anymore, like when I had my own shop.
The sad part is,we demo’d the new dupont( garbage)for 3 weeks, and they were literally throwing freebies at us,even offered to supply paint for BOTH my current projects completely free of charge, but I declined as we truely do prefer sikkens product(hell dupont gave both us painters free sata digital RP’s just for giving them a shot). Our rep was aware too that it was up to us 2 painters whether we switched or not,and we still got jack-sh#t for voting to stay with sikkens.

Our shop generally charges us the same as they charge out to insurance…..yeah….we don’t get any breaks, when I paint something at work,I literaly bring all my own supplies, down to the tack cloths, wax and grease remover, etc.

haha, already come to realize I’m not gonna be using sikkens on my own cars,I just feel bad in a way when guys ask what I use for product, and why I don’t use what I use daily at work, get what I’m saying?

Dupont has to throw guns and free paint at you to want to use their non matching basecoat.

Oh yeah, the “one and a half coat”wonder paint, that has revolutionized painting as we know it…..shit was transparent as candy half the time, and the clear was thin as water.:rofl

I think your looking at this wrong. Nobody owes you free paint. You are just the painter. The shop owner who writes the check to them each month for materials should get the free paint. Telling someone at a car show you used Sikkens paint does nothing for them. If you tell 100 people they may get 1 new customer from that. Usually the guy painting the car picks the paint. If it’s your own car and PPG will give you paint, hell use it.

In the past I have gotten free paint and also paid for it. I go into it expecting to pay and if they end up giving it to me I am very grateful. I use what materials I want based on quality and the results I want. Also remember, all paint sales are down so a lot of companies aren’t letting reps write off materials anymore. Somebody has to cover the expense.

I used it for a year. It covered fine for me, the color matches were horrible though. I am not a fan of their clears either. 72500 is nice but is slow. Spies clear over it works a whole lot better. We ended up going back to sikkens.

    Read buddy,I said I didn’t expect free,a couple times,wow…….
And yes,I have been using PPG,but can no longer get 2002 clear, and am unfamiliar with the new compliant clears, not hearing great things either, that’d make me want to expewriment.

Sikkens was never known for giving people stuff to use their product. They also dont sell to to the guy off the street. so telling people you painted your car with sikkens at a car show isnt going to give them any kind of advertising that will benefit them. they arent looking for that customer. The companies that give away lots of stuff have to do that to compensate for the deficiencies in their products . If they dont give away stuff, people wont buy.
