The shop pays the materials bills not you, why do you think you deserve free materials? You arent generating the business, the shop is! None of my painters get free materials, I will sell them anything the need at cost, but until they are paying the paint bill they will not get free materials. If I chose to give them any free materials I get that is my choice. Just pay for what you use and all will be fine. Nothing is free in life..
Sorry but if the painters did a shitty job on the cars the shop would generate no buisness.
So unless your painters are just there to put shop supplies away and mow the lawn, And you yourself do all the work, then yes you should act like that. But I assume they do the work, And do it well enough that you have repeat work and a good reputation and thats what brings in Buisness.
Its a team effort and you should share the “fringe benifits” that come from the vendors, And im not saying every time “Joe or Jim” wants to paint something you give him free paint either.
but if you get some supplies to test out maybe divide it up somehow give them a pint of it or quart , Maybe the rep from the jobber is willing to give the painters a 50-75% discount on color and then hardener at cost , Its something you could figure out with the employees,

Just dont be Greedy

Peopel see the cars at shows, they like the work, they come in to get thier claims taken care of,or they recommend friends, not a hard concept to grasp.;)
I have guys who come to get work done at my new place of work, who I used to do work for when I had my own shop, that’s bringing in business as well, you seem very greedy,I’d hate to work for you.

has nothing to do with greed. If a paint rep wants to give the painter free stuff so be it. But there is no reason for the shop to be giving out free materials to its guys. when the help fuks up and it costs the shop owner money do they reimburse the shop for the lose. No they dont. People that own business and employ others take a big risk every day they open the doors. Evey one has to work together to make the place successful. But if it was thay easy owning your own place you would still be in business for yourself :pcorn:

:agree

As an employee at a busy shop I don’t expect to be given anything. As a matter of fact the shop doesn’t even need to give me their materials at cost. A standard employee discount is cost + 10%. But my work gives me material for cost and he lets me do side jobs on weekends and evenings and that keeps me a happy employee because I know it’s more then I am entitled to. A lot of places around here the painter won’t even have keys to the shop. By buying the paint for the shops cost you’re still saving a pile of $$. 2 years ago I sprayed my dads 2500 and used about 2000$ in parts and materials, had I not used the shop connection I would have spent double that.

Well I never said the SHOP had to give out there materials for free. This whole post is about getting free materials from the JOBBER and going to the painter

It seems that joe gets the free stuff from the jobber and keeps it ( but maybe not I Don’t know ) , Thats the only sharing part I was talking about, And as joe said he helps them out by selling to them at cost, So thats a great thing, saves the painter some cash to.

So if the painter gets a lil free mats from the jobber and then can buy the rest at cost its a win – win

On a side note I bet the painters at joes place get free stuff he doesn’t even know about, Its not like you ask the boss to ask the rep about hooking them up with some color. the reps give out stuff all the time its called PR work. keeps everyone happy , and if your reps dont do it, They are the greedy ones

My painters have all been with me for almost 15 years, so I must be doing something right..No I am not greedy, but I am in business to make money, not just play round and treat it like a hobby. They have had materials given to them free, from me via our supplier. But my supplier would never directly give them free materials, and everything we mix goes across a scale so I would know if guys were taking product. It is tracked very very closely. My guys are paid well enough that they dont need to do side work or steal materials to make a living…

Joe I think you have gone and takin this post way out of context

this has nothing to do with your shop, How much you pay them, Or who pays the bills its just about the public relations of the sikkens rep.

I’m sure your an outstanding guy and we are all here to make a living and not lose money.

I know what he is after, but my point is a painter at a shop should not be getting the free materials for his or her own projects, or side work. I can see the reps giving free materials to the shop itself, helps them gain business. But giving it directly to a painter for his or her personal gain does nothing for Sikkens or your wholesale jobber. If they want to be nice and do it, fine, but they stand to gain nothing.

Candyman Im not sure if AL is italian but he’s probably 6’3″ 300lbs if that helps lol.

Why shouldnt the painter get free material, I asked the jobber for our shop to see if he would score me some paint for my own vehicle and he helped me out with 1.5L of base, whats wrong with that?

April 5, 2011 at 2:04 pm #30134

Can’t even get tee-shirts of our Sikkens rep I remember when you used to get hats, buckets, pens key rings and other assorted crap of all of the paint reps and the ones doing all of the dry good’s too those days are now long over.

April 5, 2011 at 8:24 pm #30136

Well now I feel bad for all you Sikkens users because my PPG jobber helps me out all the time and gives me demo stuff quite often.

April 6, 2011 at 4:55 am #30148

yep me too, i even get chessy christmas gifts

April 6, 2011 at 3:23 pm #30166

I feel bad for you PPG guys for having to spray PPG. :p

To be honest I could give a shit less what’s given to me for free and getting a $1 t-shirt. I only care about the color matches, quality of paint and having great support from my reps. I have had Dupont give me several paint guns, free paint and a couple d/a’s and it really didn’t matter. There rep was good too. All that didn’t keep them in the shop due to piss poor color match.

If I can’t make money due to the product I am going to lose more money than I will ever recover in free stuff.

Something else to think about, sales at all paint companies are way down. Most can’t give you free stuff as it has to be accounted for somewhere. Plus if you are hitting them up for free stuff so are 100 other painters. I’m sure it gets old real fast. How many of you would work for free at work on a weekly basis? I’m with Joe on this I can see the shop getting freebies because they actually spend the money. The painter doesn’t.
