I use Diamont and have had problems getting silvers and golds to cover in 2-3 coats. Is anyone else experiencing this with Diamont? Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I mix it 2:1, spray with a 1.2 at 29lbs. Also, use SPI 2k primer.
Today I put 4-5 of WA316N (gold) and it still didn’t look like it had good coverage. It almost looked like edge mapping but there was no wrinkling like I had put the base on too heavy. Did I mention it was 34deg. when I was spraying?
December 4, 2009 at 5:05 am #17446i use martian manure so all my stuff covers lousy but i bet your colors blended easy huh on silvers an golds i actually prefer em ta be a little poor hiding just for that reason the edge mapping sounds like ya might not have had the primer knocked down quite enuff to me been there done that  especially on silvers an golds thats when it will bite ya ever notice how hard it is ta get a silver that covers in one coat to blend real clean??kinda a double edged sword if ya know what i mean
December 4, 2009 at 5:13 am #17447I use Glaso. no problems with silvers for coverage. havnt done too many golds but really the only color that takes extra coats have been some reds. Jimmo uses diamont so maybe he will chime in
AnonymousDecember 4, 2009 at 5:14 am #17448Diamont is thick paint, I think the recommendations are 1.3 to 1.5. I’m sure the tip size could be your problem. I use a 1.4 . I bet it was going on to dry, maybe the metallics standing up. How did it feel when you tacked it??? smooth or did it make a lot of sound running your tack clothe over it. I know I had some major problems with diamont starting out because i never put it on wet enough. Since moving to a bigger tip and applying wetter it has made a huge difference in coverage, blending and headaches.
AnonymousDecember 4, 2009 at 5:21 am #17449One thing i should add is silvers and golds cover in 3 coats all day long for me, with the right undercoat i could stop at 2 but usually add an insurance coat anyhow.Yellows and Reds are the only colors I’ve noticed in diamont that don’t cover well. (like most lines)
did u tint the sealer to be as close to the color as possible? also, i can have an issue getting any color to cover right if i dont use an old basecoat i have lying around as the initial coat after the sealer. not only does it help with coverage but it can also highlight a scratch or pinhole that wasnt even visible during the primer application. doing this, i save money by buying less color. a pint can go a long way doing that. I never tried Diamont, but i used to use PPG and it did an good job but like i said in a previous post Debeer makes a basecoat that goes a lot further then any other brand i tried before. i over reduce debeer and it still covers in as little as 2 coats. i throw a 3rd coat for metallic orientation even if it doesnt need it just because im left over with so much paint. like today i ordered a pint of B96-P for honda and i only used a third of the pint to paint the entire nose and blend both front doors.
December 4, 2009 at 6:04 am #17456There are a lot of great thoughts here, thanks. Bondo has a good point in that the primer may not have been completely cured and could have been sucking up some of the color and as I piled the color on that just added more solvent.
It was very cold, 34 with a 20mph wind. I did use my heat lamp but it had a hard time getting the area from 34-70 unless I put it right on top of the panel.
Jimmo, it didn’t feel grainy esp. when I tacked and left a furrow from the cloth. That area, I heated then sanded with 1000 and rebased. It sounds like a perfect storm of rushing things.
December 4, 2009 at 8:25 am #17468I just sprayed that Gm 316n gold the other day. In sherwin it took me 4 coats. I think that most of these new colors are getting worse about coverage. I do think that the sealer will soak up the base if you dont give it enough flash,
