Today I painted with urethane single stage my boss gave me clear hardner to activate. Can somebody explain the difference between single stage and clear hardners? I used Omni MTK single stage. The clear hardner was to a cheap 4:1 urethane clear.
March 3, 2013 at 7:22 am #41771I did 2:1. mtk is 4:1 but boss said use twice as much hardner I think because it was cold. 60 degrees. He has me to do the stupidist things I’ve never seen any shop like this. Really bad but it’s a job
That definitely isn’t right. A single stage urethane could use the same hardener as a clear coat (I seem to recall a system using this). However, using just any hardener with any paint is asking for trouble. It may dry ok, wbut who knows what will happen down the road.
The active chemical in urethane hardene is basically universal, but the quantity and other additives will vary greatly… Just like the resin and additives in the paint/ clear.
Thankfully my boss would never ask me to do something like that, but if he did I would tell him where to go.
March 3, 2013 at 5:18 pm #41779Even if it was the correct hardener , adding more doesn’t make it cure faster. It will actually slow it down.
using the correct hardener and turning up the heat would have made more sense than adding incorrect amount of the wrong hardener, might be ok for the short time but you are risking possible issues down the road like dieing, cracking, hazing ,chipping, peeling etc. i most cases. even tho i think Dupont is famous for using the same hardener in single stage base coat and clear.
March 3, 2013 at 7:40 pm #41784I use limco ss and it uses the same Hardner has the limco clears, double the Hardner would make it dieback.
I see your from south fl I’m in Stuart and I’ve only used fast hardeners a little this week ( no heat booth) don’t understand why he would tell u double the amount.
March 3, 2013 at 7:48 pm #41785I know not to do these things but I am not in a good situation. I struggle in a terrible shop. I tell myself I will not be that kind of painter. Then life happens and the bills must be paid. So sometimes you just do what they say knowing whats going to happen just to keep a job.
And I will charge them again for redo. - AuthorPosts
