I was thinking about spraying the center caps on a set of wheels with some type of chrome paint and then clearing. The center nut on the cap shown below is what I wanted to spray chrome. I’m aware that it won’t look exactly like a true chrome plate. However, chrome plating the plastic nut is not an option. What do you guys think. I saw some chrome paint by rustoleum and plastikote but I told myself I would never spray bomb anything but may make an exception. If I can get a good clear coat over the chrome paint to protect it from fading or chipping, I may try it.

My guess is that the spray chrome paint would be acrylic enamel. What type of clear would you use over the acrylic enamel for durability?

What do you guys think? Possible? Forget it?

I want the finish to look like the aluminum nut on the left. The nut on the right is plastic and painted metallic silver. Both center caps shown are plastic and have some type of chrome paint coating.

anything rattle can is usually lacquer. durability with clear over will be improved but not by much. #2, rattle can chrome paints are just super fine silver. the nuts will probably just look worse then they do now and if they dont within a year they will. the closest thing to chrome paint is mirrachrome from alsa or the chrome paint from motostorm. those will give you 95% of a chrome look, more like a polished aluminum. only problem is the stuff aint cheap and you have to coat the part with black singe stage first…. that would be one option. 2, you could get some real fine silver single stage and be done. 3 you could shoot them black which will match the bbs and the bit of black you have on the car. 4, assuming these are for the car in your avatar, you could have some red single stage mixed in your paint code and do them in that. picking up a little body color in the wheels can be a real nice look.

Thanks for the info JimC. The Motochrome stuff is half the cost of the Alsa paint. I may try the Motorchrome. I’m going for mor of a polished aluminum look but thought any type of spray chrome would be slightly duller than a true chrome plate yielding a polished aluminum type look. Sounds good in theory right. LOL! 1/2 pint of that stuff is $60. Much cheaper than the alsa kit though.
