ok, so here’s the deal. i had a friend of mine approach me last nite about paint some carts. he owns a small engine repairs shop and has begin selling golf carts. he told me that he use’s a guy at the local ford dealership, and he was chargeing my firend 300 for each job. of corse my guy told me he thought it was a bit steep, and he could get the body for 400, but i didn’t say weather it was a fair price or not. but he told me he would rather pay me, cause i have 4 kids, and told me i could use his shop. plus on every side.
so depending on the price of the paints, i might not go as high as the other guy, i am looking more at volume here of work.
so i plan on putting the bodys in 1 coat of expoy primer, then top coating. (plan on staying with ppg products, more like omni,or shop line.)
now this is my delima.
ss vs bc/cc.
since i’m paint in a open area i pretty much know how long it takes to use base coat clear.
the thing is i don’t spray ss that much, and when i do, it’s in a down draft.
so the thing is, not sure how long ss takes to air dry, i plan on useing fast everything. but again not sure how what side effects that will bring with ss.
the gentlemen isn’t looking for anything nice, just decent, and the colors are solid colors, like now one is black and the other purple.so what do ya’ll think. cheap base/clear coat or ss. the thing i’m more worried about is the dry times. i know if i use base/clear, they should be able to put together in the morning. ss? don’t know. last thing i hate for them to do, mess with a soft product and tear it up.

Agreed. It’s been a long time since I have painted with SS but as I remember the dry time was much faster than bc/cc. And you can get a respectable finish with SS. Now to the open bay issue, that’s all I’ve ever really used (I have painted in spray booths) and have never had any issues (outside of issues I caused).

I’d bc/cc ’em and use a urethane sealer vs epoxy.
My vote is for SS
If you are going cheap, the OmniAU is a decent cheap SS. Easy to spray, durable, high gloss finish, and will air dry just fine overnight. I wouldn’t go with the fast reducer for the sake of speeding it up, the appropriate reducer for the condition should be fine. I have used the OmniAU in similar conditions before without issue. What is the finish like on the carts? DO you need to seal at all? I do like sealer, but if you are just going over top of a sanded primer/topcoat and the value-shade is not a big deal, then you could probably skip the cost and time for the sealer all together.
August 8, 2011 at 4:08 am #32168Well they will look fine in SS, but sometimes it’s just as cheap to do bc/cc and odds are you will shoot some in a metallic.
I’ve done a bunch of ’em and $300 is about as low as I’d want to do one a solid color.

I see a little distortion in those pix. Maybe you should sand and buff them

thanks for the imput guys.August 8, 2011 at 4:50 am #32173I think I did buff the top surfaces on most of ’em or at least denib’d ’em. But something about cut’n and rub’n the sides of a golf cart body just didn’t seem right so I let it ride. lol.
