My neighbor dropped off a fender for his street rod and asked me to “work it”.. I told him I would have to think about it, and I would call hiim tomorrow.. Backside is undercoated with something.. Front side is red oxide rattle can primer.. THE GOOD SHIT

He just lives a few houses from me, so I cant charge this guy what I normally would anyways.. I learned a long time ago, if you take care of your neighbors cars, they tend to not care that I sometimes polute the backyard air:huh: 👿

So you have to add that to the equation also.. $150 is waaaay to low.. I know this, but damn with the economy ( this guy is a house painter ) dont know how many houses he is painting these days..

There is my delima…He asked me a couple of years ago to go and look at this thing.. wanted a price.. When I quoted hiim a cheap price in my opinion. $45.00/hr + materials.. Thought he saw a ghost..

I rubbed the then lacquer primered body with some sandpaper.. Thing had been blasted, but was covered in rust under the high tech coating.. Vehicles is pitted all over the place, red lacquer putty spread over these pits all over the body etc etc etc.. You should get the picture of this by now..

Now for some photographs.. Good thing my wife is gone.. Im sure she could be finding tons for me to do around the house while she is somewhat “down” other than be on here;) B)

For that price, I dont strip the backside unless welding in metal, which will be an additional cost.. I also will not warrenty this like I would my own work..
I have no idea what lurks behind the undercoat that they applied to the backside,, I also will have to blast all the pitted area’s to get them clean again. He said he bought these at a swap meet and he primered it to keep it from rusting.. so I assume they were bare metal..

Also, I dont know what exact shape all of this is supposed to be.. You of course know, when you bolt something up it will shift to the correct form… I can shape the fender as is, but it may be off somewheat when he puts it back on..

Worth mentioning.. when I was looking at the fender real quick last night, he made the Ultimate statement of ” Now its not show car or nothin ” I laughed and told him I dont do half ass work.. well not at least where he could tell:lol: 😆 😆 😆 So I know if it were slightly off, honestly he probably would not even notice it..

As you already know, thats wayyy tooo low!!! I think even a half-a$$ed job he’s getting a good deal at that price. If you think thats as high as he’s gonna go then I’d say go for it, assuming you want to do the job. I’d at least be doubling that price. He probably doesn’t see the reality that your work in the garage is likely better then most shops. He’s getting a deal no question, you’d know better how long thats gonna take ya, materials probably wont be too much. It looks like its just up to you if you want to do it for that or fix the deck, toilet, floor,,,whatever the wife has on her list!

Shit fire Bondo.. you make good sense.. Lets keep talking..

Rewind 4 or 5 years ago and I was busy.. Had work waiting in the driveway for me to get to it.. My prices were not too high but they were not rock bottom either like the price I have suggested for this fender at the start of this thread..

Fast forward a few years and I was turning away work.. I remember talking to Clark saying I could not do this or that cause I did not have time etc…

Fast forward a couple more and now everyone is broke.. Well almost everyone B)

I refused to budge on my price for a show car year before last and lost it.. Only $1000 but I refused to do the work for less than I quoted him.. What really sucked was I lined this job up a couple years in advance and he was in the rotation.. But I squeezed in another car before him that i thought would be fast and quick money that turned into a 3 month or so gig.. then times started getting tougher and he got cheaper.. He ended up doing much of the work himself for this Shelby clone and paid someone to spray it… He then understood why I charge what I do.. but that was a little too late on my end.

I’m several thousand below any resto shop around me, but I guess since I don’t have a huge logo or heck even a separate garage these days ( i did before my move to this house ) many think I should be cheaper than cheap..

The one thing that rings thru my mind fellas is this.. I need to provide for my family.. It keeps ever expanding, and while 150-200 for that fender is extremely too low, it will buy some food for us or gas for us when I have the money in hand.. VS not doing the work because he cant afford me, and then charging my food/gas with no money to pay for it when the bill comes do..

I’m not looking for pity or anything of that nature, just typing out loud:P with my comrades.. 😉 discussing why I am considering do this sooo cheap;)

October 28, 2008 at 9:10 pm #11666

well one thing i have found is if i take somthing on like that at that price is it about gaurantees something else thats a moneymaker will come thru the doors sides you should be able ta bang that dude out an have her in primer in a day hope ya got a good sandblaster though that would help it go alot faster besides 150 is still 150$$ an it looks better in your pocket than the owners huhB) B)

October 28, 2008 at 9:22 pm #11667

Yeah.. Thinking of telling him $200 and leave it at that.. I have other work to do that pays, soooo… Still waaay cheap, but doable

October 28, 2008 at 9:31 pm #11668

ya could tell him 150 an he buys the paint an materials that way it ends up around 250 then he still thinks he is getting it for 150;) most guys ya send em to the paint store with a list they never associate the paint cost with you plus make him by the mud to he will have 300 into that fender an still think it cost him 150 or 200 👿

October 28, 2008 at 9:38 pm #11669

btw 200 does sound a little more reasonable dont it:) an sides ya need ta stock up a little on his nickle ive found alot of guys like that are more than willing ta buy the materials an its fun to see the look on their faces when they bring that box in an go ya wouldnt believe what that stuff cost me:blink:  but they never associate that cost with what your charging em:laugh:  trust me plus some of those guys will write alot of that stuff of thru their buissness any way just somthing ive learned over the yrs;)

October 29, 2008 at 7:58 am #11676

That’s a great idea….have him spring for the materials!….might be a bit of an eye opener for him.
