Has anyone used a stud welder on a roof panel and left the headliner in the vehicle? I”m wondering if it’s even necessary to take the headliner out if enough heat will not be created to do damage. Unlike a door panel, the headliner is closer to the panel than in a roof. Please advise if you have done this and share the results?

I used to use the panel beater there, but it didn’t put out as much heat.

You will probably be ok, and if you are doing a repair at the front there is the cross member there. But as with anything, when in doubt, do it the safest way.

Thanks guys, I will probably just take the headliner out. This will also give me an opportunity to practice some metal working since this job is not time dependent (meaning hammer, dolly, slapping spoon and shrinking disc work). I will try and post some pics whenever this work starts as they may help another enthusiast.

I don’t know if you live in the desert, but around here roofs are ALWAYS at least a little rusty due to condensation. To weld off whatever paint finish was there from the factory would make it sooo much worse.

    :cheers
