hey Guys,
I have talked to a few of you guys on the vent briefly about a basecoat gun. I wanted to create a thread so i can document all the information, for my search, for a good basecoat gun.
My main concern for the gun, is that it has got to spray metallics (silvers) very well. I am trying to limit mottling to user mistakes only and not the gun’s fault. I want the gunt o be HVLP.
My Price Limit is $300
Thanks!

I can’t think of a good basecoat gun that will be under $300. I have used both the LVB(purple) and LVX(orange) aircaps and they both work well. There isn’t a color I can’t spray with the LVX easily. Low overspray also.
August 21, 2010 at 5:28 am #24108I agree. If you have a 400 then get the orange cap fot it. Thats what i use for base everyday. Its a great gun. Maybe not the #1 base gun out there but its damn good compared to anything else on your price range.
I have considered the orange Cap for the past couple months, that was my first and foremost choice, but the only problem I have with that is that I do not want to use one gun for both base and clear.
One of the main reasons is that I keep base in my gun all the way until I clear, in case i spot something I missed right before clear. Also just for the fact of not having to clean out the basecoat gun to use my clear gun.
Ideally yea, if Bondo can sell me his LPH that he never uses or if Blover wants to sell one of his spair LPH’s =)
August 21, 2010 at 5:43 am #24110I have a few spare LPH’s …..just saying
I have used the same gun for base and clear many times with no problems. If worried spend 1 minute and pull the nozzle out and clean real quick. A chopstick with a towel around it and a little thinner will clean a nozzle real quick.
I’m a really big fan of the Sata HVLP with the WSB air cap on it. I know they are a little more expensive that $300.00 but in my opinion you can’t spend too much on a tool that is going to make you alot of money in the long run. I’m actually getting ready to buy another one so I have two base guns when we convert to water in about a month.
