Hi guys….. I prep and sometimes paint for this shop I work at. I’ve been with this company for almost two years and recently they bought a another shop. They needed someone who could prep and paint, so I was the right guy for the new shop..The shop has 1 body tech so far it d be great for me as a starter lead painter since there’s not much work yet. I was offered by the son of the owner to paint for the shop so he told me that my manager would talk to me after couple days about the position…After two days, I found out that they just hired a different guy.. Of course, I was upset cuz I thought I was gonna get the job I was offered.

how many years in the trade do you have? if youve only got the two years experience I could see the point, but I would also be pretty upset if they had already offered me the position and hired someone else. I worked at a shop when I first was starting out, and after about 3 years they told me I was gonna be the second painter in a high production shop, well those were empty promises. I stayed there for a couple more years and no change so I moved on. I prepped for 5 years before becoming a head painter, after about three years I felt I was ready to advance. It played with my head a little, guess other people thought otherwise. That all being said, youve got every right to be pissed, but usually all works out in the end……hopefully. good luck.

Well two years for this company but 6 years total experience and I’ve been spraying for 4 years.. What makes me upset that they hired a guy from different company, it could have been more reasonable if they got a guy from other store (they have 14 stores) by seniority cuz I know there are more prep/paint people in their company who’s been with them longer than I do. But they just got a guy from different company. Also, I was asked so many times if I wanted the job I told them YES! But all of the sudden somehow the lead painter didn’t want me to go cuz he knows since I started working with him, he’s been making more money than before and he gets to go home early as well. I pretty much know the job, I can tint, paint/spray, prep, all those stuff that painter does.. Actually I run the paint department for him, I schedule all the cars that needs to be painted and so on. All he does is spray. I got to the point that I dont wanna just prep anymore, I want it to spray and start from there..I’m not learning anything from the lead painter.. I dont wanna be a super prepper. Hopefully, I can find a new place for me.

Ya believe me I know the feeling of making someone else alot of money, it really sucks. I finally bit the bullet and went elsewhere, not that I wanted to but I really had no choice, and my painter was pissed. But such is life, now I do all my own prep and paint. Id talk with your boss and if it goes nowhere then decide from there.
