Ok I thought I was Crazy but I have checked and rechecked My Tack rags are leaving debris behind causing me problems of another world.
I really did think ALL the problems were with my booth but nope My booth is just part of the problem!:cens
Is there any Tack rags that doo do a really good job?I still cant understand how something sooo dang sticky can lave so much behind:cens
March 21, 2011 at 3:03 pm #29699Gerson, Dupont, Sikkens and Crystal all make nice ones that should work fine. After you take one out of the package let it sit for a little bit if it is one of the real sticky ones.
If your using a good brand already your problem may be too much static on the vehicle or part or incorrect application of basecoat. There should be a very minimal amount of overspray to tack off if your spraying correctly. Sometimes on a tricky blend you might have more.
Heck Im talking about after wiping down with Wax and grease remover before any painting
The Paper towels Im buying and useing are supposed to be lint free But there Not. Thats were I belive my problems are coming from.
My Tack rags (Crystal I believe) are leaving some lint behind mind you its hard to see with my Old eyes but I can see it when I look close.I thought a Lot of my problem was being caused by my booth But not now.
I need to find a Better Towel for final wipe downs maybee?
March 21, 2011 at 9:20 pm #29701no such thing as a lint free towel. just the way it is. after wiping with w+g do you blow the car off and wipe with the tack rag or just wipe with the tack rag.
Most of the time we just wipe with Tack rag but we do blow stuff off as well.
Wipe whole car down with Tack cloth then wipe again just before I shoot and its still leaving crud behind.
I was kinda wondering if maybee my W/G remover was biting into substrate causing fibers to embed themselves in substrate.
SPI waterborn and Regular chemical I have both and use both I use either one depending on the job. (just one of my wonderings)
Doesnt seam to be the case though because Im found fibers left behind on Bare steal as well.Im going to try a Different hand wipe for final wipe downs If I can find any at my Vegas Jobber Today.
March 21, 2011 at 11:34 pm #29703blow off the car/part thouroughly before it goes in the booth. Wipe it down with a slovent cleaner and then a waterborne cleaner. Blow it off at low pressure. Tack. Mist a coat of PPG DX103 over the surface. Let flash for 5 minutes, retack and apply paint.
If your area has low humidity you probably have a static issue. waterborne cleaners that are alcohol based work well for killing static. If it is real dry misting a little water on the booth floor wont hurt either.
I like the crystal tack rags but they are alittle to sticky for me, recently switched to the gurson tack cloth and I love them. There is no such thing as a lint free towel, the closest thing I have found to lint free is the tareless. They leave the least amount of lint that I have found. I always w&g and use the waterborne cleaner, then blow it down at the same time as i tack, then before I spray I tack it down wiping in the same direction on every panel.(dont know if it makes much of a difference thats just how I was tought). I turn out really clean jobs limiting how much I actually have to buff which I hate doing. An extra couple minutes prepping a car can save a lot of time in the end.
March 22, 2011 at 7:00 pm #29718even if the towels are leaving lint behind, its your job to make sure the parts are blown and tacked off properly. if you do that it will take care of any lint from the towels

March 22, 2011 at 7:51 pm #29719try puttin ur tac rag in ur pocket about 10 mins b4 you use it a warm tac rag picks up an holds dirt better than a cold stiff one hope this helps:cheer: :cheer:
March 23, 2011 at 6:40 am #29724i like the crystals, but the edges are frayed and can leave bits behind, ppg has some that are blue and are not frayed on the ends. and blowing while you tack of helps a lot.
March 23, 2011 at 7:35 am #29726I know what youre talking about. I use to use crystal rags. If the rag was about used up the ends will fray and little fragments will fall off or catch on a rough bend edge. To me it looks like tiny pieces of lint or strings. Most likely its from the tack cloth and not your wipedown rag. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out this problem and the tack cloth is what I narrowed it down to.
March 24, 2011 at 2:14 am #297423M Aqua tack rags for me.
Once a car is in the booth, masked up ready to go, I’ll blow it off with high pressure air, paying particular attention to any edges or panels gaps, wiping down with an old tack rag as I go. That removes the vast majority of the dust & lint, letting my clean tack rag concentrate on removing the last few bits during a second wipe down whilst blowing off with my gun.
I rarely tack between coats, as I find this can drag bits from the tack rags, hindering rather than helping.
Well I was out in the shop again today and I am 100% certain My problem are from the Cheap Blue Towels Im useing.
I am going to shop for a better brand of towels to use as a Final wipe.
Water born W/G remover is breaking these towels down weird….. cheap towels.
Wish I would have caught it sooner would have saved me a bunch of work and time.
Wish My Eyes were better I would have caught it soonerBlowing the Parts off 1st before Tack ragging did help though thanks guys
