what do you guys final sand with before shooting water base? i know most tds say atleast 600… but i get away with 500 all the time. and i bet even 400 maybe 320 if black?
also, do you guys block sand after primer? i just hit it with the DA, comes out flat enough. sometimes, i just feather reeeeaaallly good and just successfully base right over it with no edgemaping, color bleed, or anything a few extra coats cant fix. even silvers. no primer filler, primer, sealer, or anything. just right over my extra featherd edge final sanded with 600 DA dry. might take a few extra coats to hide factory undercoats that are a lot darker than top coats,.. and honestly.., ive even based right over juuuust barely exposed burn thrus. im talkin dime sized. havent any problems yet. anyone else to this? shoot me :hunt
AnonymousApril 23, 2010 at 8:56 pm #20810400 for solids , 500-600 for metallics (DA). I’ll use only 600 hand paper on metallic colors. yes, block after primer with 320, then guide coat and finish sand. If there’s bare metal i will always prime the breakthroughs.
April 23, 2010 at 11:53 pm #20814I’ve never found the need to go finer than a 500 disc on any colour, and usually stick to 320 on solids, 400 on darker colours.
I’ll block my primer if I need to, but if I’ve done my filler work properly then there’s no need – the primer is only there to seal the surface and fill the sanding scratches 😉
this is an interesting topic, Ive always used 800 for blend panels, so are you guys saying clear will fill 500-600 grit scratches without swelling up or showing through?
I took the question to mean for areas I was painting to full coverage over, not blend panels. I use 1000 grit maximum for those.

April 24, 2010 at 6:53 am #20844I’ll finish primer in P500 and blends in P800. I will usually go around my primer with P600 only where my coverage coats will go.
I like P500 for primer because it is fine enough that you won’t see scratches but coarse enough that you can seal over if needed.
