7/16″ gap on both sides of the rear valance… Not too sure what to do about it.

Spent so much time on getting the door and rear molding edges right, it will stick out like a sour thumb…

Barely get gaps that straight on late late model cars…

weld on a piece of gas welding rod to make the gap smaller and stop crying:P

    November 29, 2008 at 6:33 am #11936

It’s a good idea. but the gap really is 7/16″ on both sides.
That is about the width of your index finger.

How many rods can you stack before it’s considered excessive?

I warn you these are huge. I only reduced them 50%
Not sure if this site auto resizes or not…

The site does indeed resize them, if you want to see the actual size. Right click and view image, or copy the url and paste it into your browser.
You should even be able to zoom in some.

for some reason i thought you were showing a fender gap at first:blush: . why are you trying to fit the valance now that you have everything else welded on. you should have fit it all before getting the welder out. it would have made it a lot easier could have sucked those quarters in just a little to make it look good

    November 29, 2008 at 7:56 am #11945

    You’re absolutely right.
But the damn valance was back ordered at the time.

So I used the Original rear valance from my 64 1/2. (identical) Hoping that the after market would be close enough…

Sadly I’ve found it is 7/16s short on both sides…
And by the time I got the rear valance, the damn thing came damaged…

I’ve been getting damaged parts like crazy this year. Quarters, Fenders, Valances…
You name it, I probably got a damaged one this year…

Yo Teapot, stop crying about it and make it fit.

Every one of those I’ve ever done fits like that. Just add a little metal to the edges and fit it to the quarters. If you really want it to fit nice and flush cut the spotwelded brackets off the back of the valance that hold those spring clipped bolts on and weld some studs directly to the valance instead. The aftermarket quarters don’t have a deep enough pocket to let the valance sit flush without doing some mods most of the time.

In the time you’ve spent whining I could’ve had the thing fitted and in primer.

looks like there might be enough lip there to flatten the ends of that valance and reroll them where you want it. the door to quarter gap needs some attention as well doesnt appear even in the pic.

Well I went out and weighed my options. And it looks like I’ll be doing a combination of a lot of your suggestions.

ya know richard i think your on the right trackB) B) B) a little this an a little that will go along way btw its kinda par for the course when ya replace that much sheet metal on an old car not like hanging new oem

    How’s that? 😛

Still a little more tweaking, but the gap is as good as gone. (Less than 1/32nd of an inch)

Only problem is the squared edge at the bottom… (Or uh top if the car was right side up.)

There’s no way to take it out with a hammer and dolly because it runs full length, and is quite reinforced…

Not exactly sure what I’ll do there… I’d like to lead it, just because I hate putting fillers on edges, but I don’t want the heat messing everything up on the corner of that quarter…
I’ll likely just use a small amount of fiberglass reinforced filler… (It’s less than a 16th of an inch anyways.)

It is fairly protected by the valance, and there is hardly and chance of anything catching that edge… And if it does it’s going to have to go through the valance first. :side:
