I’ve got a motorcycle part here off a 96 Harley 1200 xl (paint color name is sunglo red) and the closest color I see is Crimson red sunglow but appears to be for an 08-09 Harley. I am missing a toner to mix it but I will have it on monday to see how close it is. In the case of having to tint it, how do you guys handle this kind of thing? should I try and tint the groundcoat or the candy first?

I’ve found that the base match is more critical in obtaining an acceptable match. Candy coats are a little more forgiving so long as its the correct color. The hard part comes when trying to figure how many coats of candy it takes to shift the color to match.

You know how to do a let down panel dont you Jimmo? I would get my base close and spray a test panel out and see how many coats of candy it will take. Probably go easier than you think.

Same premise, but a with a letdown card you spray your base color out (I usually let it dry, then mask off some bare base) then one coat of candy over the whole card, let it dry, mask it off (usually about an inch), spray a second coat over the whole card, let it dry, and mask that one off, spray a third…… I usually do 6-7 “steps”,unmask all the candy then clear.

Gives you a good idea as to how many candy coats will get you there.

Another thing you”l see is when you start to get more and more coats of candy on, you’ll see less drastic change between each additional coat.

Kevin beat me to it.. Otherwise its hard to know how many coats you need for a good match.. Sometimes it takes 2 coats sometimes 6..

well, to make life alittle easier…maybe, if there is another shop near you that you are friendly with that is ppg just have them mix it for you. ppg makes harley’s paint so they have the formulas for it. otherwise harley doesn’t give out their paint codes or formulas at all. also, if you decide to use rm, dont bet for a minute that their colormatches for any of the motorcycles are going to be anywhere in the realm of a match or even close. some do and some are so bad its not even in the same color family. the base color is going to be the biggest factor in the match. candy colors are generally the same from one paint company to the next because all the dyes come from one manufacturer. harley on the other hand ALWAYS likes to modify colors a bit just so a shop cant or has a real difficult time doing a colormatch…not every color but alot of them. for instance if they use a cnady red they will put just a drop of another color to slightly change it. you’ll shoot the candy red thinking thats all it is but never ends up being a perfect match. i have seen harley go so far as to have pigment maufacturers make a custom pigment or effect toner specifically for them which is not available to any paint company. i see this happening more and more on newer models. btw in smartrack there are some harley codes under motorcycles and alot more under fleet. good luck there jimmo!! :exci

What do you guys think I should do with this? It depends on the lighting somewhat, you can see under the sungun it looks pretty good (last one).
