Not sure on year but its a Mazda MX5 or Miata? over the pond.
Colour is Sunlight Silver code 22V.
Job was to cut and replace 2 sill/rocker sections, clean up rusty wheel arches and tend to a few dents and stonechipped bonnet/hood.
Primer; Debeer HS
Base; Debeer Berobase 500 solvent
Clear; Lechler HSDont mention the booth, its home made and ready for a clean up and fresh paint.
March 5, 2013 at 12:33 am #41800beautiful finish! what lechler clear is that? i’m on the market for some clear.
March 5, 2013 at 12:48 am #41801Hi John, thanks.
Clear is Lechler Macrofan 2000 HS with medium hardener/activator and a medium thinner/reducer.
Mix is 2:1 + 5-20%. About 10% thinner/reducer in this job.
We pay around £80 for 4 litres of clear and 2 litres of hardener/activator so not bad price either.
I used to use Lechler Megalack UHS clear which was about the same price but was harder to spray, needed more thinner/reducer and started having problems with solvent pop even in our low temp home made booth.
I can really hose the Macrofan on when needed and it wont pop. Also air dries overnight well unlike some HS clears.
March 5, 2013 at 2:56 am #41803Hey mate, looks awesome great work, I’d be well pleased with that, do you need to do much nibs and polish 😉 with your home made booth is it yours or do you work for someone. Do you get much time to do spare or you not really aloud
March 5, 2013 at 3:11 am #41806Hey Rikka. Thankyou for the kind words.
Theyre are a few nibs in the bonnet and top of the back wings but nothing down the sides. We usually get some in the horizontal panels unless we have a real big clean out of the workshop. I think we would probably get hardly any with more regular maintanance and a purpose built booth.
I work for my father so I can do pretty much as I please at work in my spare time but theres not been much side work for a while to be honest.
March 5, 2013 at 3:18 am #41807Sounds great, how do you do your nibs and what cut compound etc do you use, if I’ve only got a couple of nibs to do I use 3000 wet , but if I’m doing a whole panel then 2000, the nibs and peal ares then use 3000 the fade out the flattish ares ( so you don’t get the peel with flat spots ever where) which I’ve seen from some other shops do lol, my boss takes a cut from my spare but if I’ve got the work I can make my wk wage in a weekend lol happy days
March 5, 2013 at 4:03 am #41817I take nibs down with 1500 wet on a block then buzz over with 2000 if needed.
For polishing I use 3m fast cut and 3m finesse it with the appropriate polishing foams.
Your work must be super glossy if you 3000 your paint!
Does your boss take a percentage or just a set amount per job?
March 5, 2013 at 4:05 am #41818Your work looks great :cheers The homemade both looks good to me,I have seen much worse, you should snap some pics so we can see it.Is it heated?
March 5, 2013 at 5:48 am #41823I think your homemade booth turns out cleaner work than my purpose built booth! I would love to see better pics of your setup, I want to outfit my garage so I can get a few of my own done without having to borrow someone else’s booth.

March 5, 2013 at 8:03 am #41825Wow! Awesome lookin job! And in a homemade booth? Very nice. I had to paint for about 5 years in a cinder block booth with windows all the way around and shades to pull down when the sun was shinning in too much. Then there were the bodymen cutting filler in front of the filters. I don’t miss those days at all. Here’s to you man.

I try my best, I use 3m and ferecala mostly, and then depending on the age or state of the car depends on what polish and wax I use.
My boss takes money for the booth rate and paints, so over the yrs I’ve got my own fillers, primers and clears to help keep the cost down but I use his basecoat so he does make something on the spare jobs, our hourly rate in guernsey is £48 and I charge £25, I did a spare couple of weeks ago which came to £729 but by the time my boss took his cut I had £390 which was a pain by every little helps 😉March 6, 2013 at 2:00 am #41842
Job done.
I will put up pictures of our booth when we get it tidied up and painted!
It is basically a spraying room rather than a booth as such.
We have inlet filters at either end and an exhaust chest in the centre of the booth which doesnt work the best but its limited with the building we have.
Heat is ducted in from a propane heater which keeps it warm enough in mild and warm weather but we really struggle to paint in the winter months. Overnight air drying with HS products can be a pain too.
Rikka, sounds like your boss takes quite a cut! But as long as your happy with your cut at the end of it thats all that matters.
Hourly rate over there sounds high too. We manage £32 per hour from insurance companies. We get £25 per hour for fabrication and welding work but we get less than that on ordinary private work as its done to a price and it always takes longer than expected.
March 6, 2013 at 2:11 am #41844If your a mechanic over here in guernsey you can pay up to £90 an hour, the cost living over here is so high, if you type in google state agents in guernsey Channel Islands ull see how pricey the houses are lol, I’ve been using high solid the last coue of weeks and think its great but still have a little trouble with it due to the fact I’m using three different clears ,
Hey mate how did you get in the trade, every one has there story ha ha what’s yours, every one feel free to ad to this :rock
