Had this volvo come in this morning.

Very badly stone chipped bonnet/hood, so I removed the hood from the car and covered it in paint remover.

The colour coats came of no problem but the e-coat would not shift see pics.

I even tried re-appling paint remover direct on to the e-coat left it for 30 mins never even tickled it lol

    Paint remover on e-coat

    Tough stuff indeed!

So what are your thoughts – scuff, fill the chips, then prime?

took about a further 45 mins with p120 disc’s to remove the ecoat

worked it up to a p240, etch, wet on wet primer and painted.

    Job done :S

A strip disk would have made quick work of that.

Strips like 60. leaves a 120 grit surface. And doesn’t have any effect on the metal.
    Makes quick work of E-Coats.

But a little note for Andy is. The last thing you want to do when using chemical strippers, is to leave any of the coatings that were exposed to the stripper on the car.
It might stay on, but there’s no telling what effects it chemically could have had to it.

    Ah yes, thanks for that.

I was asking what his plans were rather than suggesting a course of action, but must admit I hadn’t really thought about the consequences. Cheers 🙂

I have noticed that Volvos have some of the toughest e-coat on them. When we get a new part a p320 d/a disc has a hard time putting a scratch in them. Nothing as fun as stripping parts, bet that was a good time Nick!
