Hello all… I’ve been having some problems lately with debris in the paint. I spray in a cross-draft booth
with the 3M booth wrap on the walls and ceiling. I sweep out the booth almost evey night. i also wear a shoot
suit when I paint and I tack during basecoat application. I’ve been spaying a lot of hoods, bumpers, and
tailgates lately so there should not be much contamination from just single parts. I switch out my filters and
it seems worse. I used Vilodon R1 intake filters that are white in color. After a few time of use they are a dirty
tan color even on the inside of the booth. Could the dirt be going through the filter? My friend was creating a lot
of dust sandblasting the other day. Should I put a pre-filter before the intake filter or switch brands.
The old owner used two green tacky intake filters and it seemed to keep a lot of dirt out. Should i go back to two
intake filters. Any suggestions for minimizing dirt would be very helpful. Thanks

i also have a cross draft booth but i sweep my booth before each use and water down the floor lightly. but i found tacking between every coat of base, not spraying heavy coats and letting it flash properly minimizes trash significantly. id switch the filters out more often if you notice lots of dirt on them and make sure they fit securely and are perfectly sealed. watch out for cracks along the joints of the booth. if you have any seal them with caulk. every little bit helps

try putting some prefilters on before the intake. that may help alot. i’m sure you do, but break down the gun and make sure it’s clean, and are you use pps cups or a cup with the inline filter?

Yea I always take the gun apart to clean it. I also use the PPS cups and use a screw on Motor Guard air filter before the gun. I think I’m going to get some pre-filters. Thanks

well if that won’t work, than go back to the way the old owner had it. i won’t worry to much, i seem to get a little more my self when paint just parts, and i have a down draft.

MoCoke, have u ever replaced the door weatherstripping and door sweeps on your booth. I can’t find anything good to use for the door sweeps. I did get some Frost King foam tape to seal the door joints. Seemed to help at first, but now its geting torn up. Oh yea I forgot to mention that my booth is an old Binks. I called Binks about getting some replacement panels and the guy laughed and said that they have not made spray booths in over 15 years.

dang, that had to hurt haveing them laugh like that. have you tried lookin at lowes?

Yea thats where I got the foam tape from, but I didn’t see anything good to use for the door sweeps.

where you gettin your filters from?

I am also in a crossdraft. I sometimes find the first batch or two through the booth after I’ve changed the filters is a little dirty. Another thing to think about is a lot (probably most) of your dust is created within the booth. paint builds up on airlines, the floor, even your exhaust filters can send particles in your job. The air doesn’t always flow straight through, You’d be surprised how much of a whirlwind they can create.

I got my filters from my local jobber. They are 20×20 Viledon R1’s. I also changed the exhaust filters as well.

you may be able to fine some one who works/maintains/cleans them, and see about the door sweepers. the jobber might know someone.

I heard of a really smart and good looking guy one time that uses indoor/outdoor carpeting in his booth. Suppose to work good.

I wouldn’t want to sandblast in the shop where my booth air is coming from. Sand gets everywhere.

Also parts have a tendency to attract more dirt as they usually have a little more static. It builds up from blowing them off and wiping them down. On a whole car it is either absorbed more. Try a mist coat of PPG DX103. If you pay attention when your blowing off a single part when it is less humid you can get a little shock, a whole car doesn’t do that.

Alot of my dirt actually comes from my tack cloth:wak If my base goes on dry and has a roughness to it, when I tack over it tiny fibers get pulled off the rag on get snagged on the rough base. Its a real pain in the butt! Its real bad if I use an older cloth.
